Wolfstride

It’s nearly impossible to keep count of all the video games that have been inspired by anime. From RPG to action and visual novels, anime has always been a constant in the video game scene. Today we’ll talk about a game that’s been heavily inspired by anime, developed by an indie studio in Brazil. Wolfstride is an upcoming title so influenced by anime, it borrows a couple designs from it. So, what’s this stylized piece developed by Ota Imon Studios in Sao Paulo all about? Is it worth playing? Well, let's talk about it.

About the game

We join ex-yakuza Dominique Shade and his partners to team up and use their abilities to control COWBOY, a legendary mecha they've received. Controlling COWBOY doesn't require three people, so each has a role. One is the manager, the other the mechanic, and of course, Dominique Shade is the pilot, and they are on their way to winning the worldwide championship of mecha fights.

The game features a turn-based battle system, fully-fledged with special attacks, defense, and all that you could expect from a nice RPG. And keeping in mind that this game is an RPG, there's also the mecha upgrading mechanics, gathering parts and pieces, and finding the best enhancements for COWBOY to become the best mecha around.

But It’s not all fighting and enhancing your mecha, as there’s always a management part to the tournament. This gameplay aspect centers on getting enough time for the repairs and keeping tabs on the budget. It’s easy to just want to go for the most expensive parts and try and install them all before the next fight. But some procedures take longer than the others, and the budget is all but infinite, so keeping an eye on those things is really important.

Anime inspired

It’s pretty easy to see just how much this game is inspired by manga and anime. The fact that the main character is pretty much a combination of Kamina from Gurren Lagann and Spike from Cowboy Bebop.

The battle system reminds us in many ways of the classic Final Fantasy games or Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. But with a very different and stylized art direction. The visuals look completely taken out of a manga page, and the animations are just like cool anime. Even though the 2D exploration is more retro, the general black and white visuals of this game really make it stand out.

Wolfstride has a lot of elements that make it really unique, so it's hard to find a comparison game or something in the same league. Overall it is a very polished game, and a pleasant surprise to see just how great everything works here. The only real negative point here would be that it lacks content, as you actually come to expect more game hours and content from an RPG like this.

However, the visuals make up for most of the negative parts, and the incredible work they did with the designs and animation make Wolfstride a game worth playing.

Pros:

  • Incredible art
  • Excellent designs
  • Interesting mechanics
  • Unique

Cons:

  • Lacks content
  • Repetitive gameplay
