Model kit builders rejoice: Gundam Breaker 3 lets you build (and destroy) the Gundam kits of your dreams. With a ton of pieces to choose from, and satisfying combat to boot, this game takes everything the series is known for and improves on nearly every aspect of it.

While the gameplay remains as repetitive as ever, there’s no denying how addictive building your own custom Gundam can be. The sheer variety and content available in Gundam Breaker 3 are enough to justify its existence in the eyes of any Gunpla fan – as long as they can overlook some minor annoyances.

Built to Destroy

As its name implies, the core gameplay mechanic of Gundam Breaker 3 has the player “breaking” enemy Gunpla to use their parts in their own creations. It’s worth noting that the giant robots that appear in the anime are not in this game – instead, we got Gunpla, which are the popular plastic model kits available in hobby stores.

Don’t let their tiny sizes deceive you: combat in Gundam Breaker 3 is as though as it gets. Similar to the classic Custom Robo, mixing and matching pieces from different Gundam will allow you to create a customized robot. Considering that there are hundreds of different model kits in this game, the possible customization options are nearly endless.

Making a comeback from Gundam Breaker 2 are The Awakening Mode and Burst Action combat mechanics. These overdrive modes allow your Gundam to flatten the competition with ease – not that it was too difficult in the first place.

Mowing Down the Drones

One of the only downsides of having a game that focuses so much on customization is that it leaves very little room for refined combat. In Gundam Breaker 3’s case, this manifests in the form of endless waves of enemies that feel more like a chore than a challenge.

Much like the Dynasty Warriors series, taking down the minor enemies is as simple as continually pressing the same button. While it might be fun to customize your Gundam with multiple weapons and attachments, their efficiency never truly shines due to the game’s lackluster combat.

Another issue is that moving your Gundam around can feel somewhat sluggish. The movement and aiming controls are responsive enough, but they feel somewhat slow, especially when the game tries to be a fast-paced third-person action title.

One-on-one battles, on the other hand, feel great. Having an enemy that’s on equal footing as your custom Gundam turns up the difficulty high enough for the game to be more enjoyable.

Straight to the Action

The main hub in Gundam Breaker 3 allows players to waste as little time as possible before they get into combat. The customization UI, while somewhat daunting at first glance, does a great job explaining what each part does.

It never feels like you’re randomly picking pieces just to make your Gundam look cool, but instead, it’s as if you’re building the ultimate combat machine. Just don’t get too tangled in the game’s plot: it never gets much more complicated than your standard Pokémon lookalike.
