Point and click adventure games are considered by many to be games of yesteryear, and that may be the case for most but Truberbrook by btf GmbH offers a new take on that classic format. Join Hans Tannhauser as he visits a rural village of Cold War Germany and discovers secrets that could affect his world and all its parallels.

Gameplay

A story driven adventure game with a focus on the character aspect; there is a great deal of puzzle solving throughout, some of which are basically sight gags while others genuinely made me feel clever for figuring them out. Your objective is to point and click-navigate Hans throughout the different scenes and interact with the other characters that show up.

Story

Set in the 60’s, in a parallel universe, you follow young American scientist; Hans Tannhouser. He is visiting a small, remote village in the mountains of Germany after winning some holiday tickets. The world has some differences to ours, as you’d expect; Vietnam, Russia and America are in the throes of a space race, completely unaware of the events unfolding in this small village.

Shortly after his arrival, Hans research paper is stolen and he must figure out who did it and why? The game moves into an interesting story about other dimensions, something you’d expect to see in Bioshock: Infinite, and I personally found it a little clunky at times but ultimately it works and you feel engrossed into discovering just what exactly is going on in this little country village and how it relates to the greater world and even the worlds beyond that.

Style

The art is this game is stunning and you can feel the love they put in from start to finish. With hand-crafter scenery, clearly the most distinctive feature, every detail is custom made. The models are scanned and digitally recreated in their software. This is the same technique that is used for Harold Halibut and I must say, when it’s done this well, it looks absolutely fantastic. It’s like playing a Wes Anderson movie and it’s a niche aesthetic that is hard to top in regards to creativity and effort.

There is more to it than just the art style, there’s small things like the fact the American main character speaks with an American accent but all the native Germans have a genuine German twang in their voice that adds more to the localisation to the game than you can imagine.

The smooth doom jazz that plays in the background bops and I got nothing but praise for the ambiance that it provides to the player.

7

This is an interesting game; I will absolutely give it that. If the story doesn’t grab you then you should complete it just to see how incredible the artwork is and bear in mind that it was all handmade. Give it a go.

Pros

  • Incredible art style
  • Music sets a great mood

Cons

  • Story can sometimes feel disjointed and weak
  • At times, the voice acting can feel like it doesn’t match up with what you’re seeing
