Nippon Marathon is a four-player sports game that takes you on a marathon across Japan, Nippon Marathon is available for download on Windows and also has a version on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It is similar to Fall Guys but with different physics and graphics. The physics on this game are for cheap laughs and can be fun, but they also make no sense.

The Physics

The physics within a sports game like Nippon Marathon is important to how the overall gameplay will be. The physics within Nippo Marathon is just a goofy mess of ragdoll effects and random falling that can be fun at times but can get overused. This is definitely not a realistic sports game as much as it is just odd for the sake of gameplay.

The Story

The only thing taken less seriously than physics is the story. It takes place within a game show and has 4 characters. The four main characters all have their own quirk and outlandish traits, like cosplaying a lobster for example. Each of the four characters has their own backstory and reason for wanting to win the marathon, but they are far from interesting and are mainly just random things for the sake of humor, which tends to be low-hanging fruit in this game.

Fruit is Key

Speaking of fruit, Nippo Marathon also has a system similar to Mario Kart 64, where you can use items to slow down opponents. In this game, those items are fruits. Although it is a ridiculous aspect added to make the game more quirky random, they are useful for the gameplay, so if you see a piece of fruit, be sure to pick it up and launch it at your opponents for a better chance at coming in first.

Mini-games

Mini-games in Nippo Marathon are different from those in other games, mainly because you don’t have a choice to do them, you are just randomly forced to. Usually in between races, but sometimes during them, you will be pulled into random mini-games that are fitting to the game show storyline, and not much more than that.

Worth Buying?

Normally the answer for if you should get a game depends on what you’re looking for, but in this case, the answer is no. Fall Guys, Happy Wheels, and even QWOP are similar games that are free and do what Nippo Marathon does but better. Nippo Marathon may be fun for some people at first, but it is still as forgettable as a game like this gets.

Nippo Marathon is a game with goofy physics and odd characters for the sake of being different and funny, but it just doesn’t work. With that being said, getting three of your friends together and competing in this marathon can be a lot of fun at first, but it will be short-lived. The ragdoll effects and other odd physics will get old quickly and make this game more of a novelty than anything.
