War of the Worlds

I was pretty blown away that War of the Worlds was even a thing! Sure, other games have brought this iconic story to life over the years, and it is one of the most well-known pieces of sci-fi media ever created. However, I had no idea that there was a new modern first person survival shooter style of game coming! Coming is the keyword, as when I am writing this, the game is not yet fully complete, but I was so excited when I found out about this that I had to offer a little extended preview to try and get some more people to try it out.

A War Indeed!

Do not worry, this is not based on that horrible 2025 War of the Worlds movie that had Ice Cube in it! If anything, it has more in common with the 1950s movie or even the Tom Cruise one from the early 00s. You probably know the drill by now. The story here is that there is an alien invasion where these creepy-looking aliens in their tripod craft want to take Earth for themselves, and the way they are going to do this is not just with a full-scale invasion, but the extermination of the human species! I will be honest and say that I do not know how story-driven the full game will be, but the bones are certainly here for something cool.

Not Just The Aliens You Have To Worry About

One of the most interesting things about the gameplay of War of the Worlds is that the developer has said that there are horror elements at play here, and I think that is pretty cool. At first glance, this may look like another first person shooter, but there are other elements at play here. You have to find resources to survive, be it new weapons, ammo, and gear or even food, yes, that is right, this is actually a survival game too! If an alien tripod is in your vicinity, you'd better run and do whatever you can to survive! Also, the aliens are not the only antagonists in the game; you will have to deal with the military and panicked people who will kill you in order to take what you have!

Humans vs Aliens

One of the aspects of War of the Worlds that I am dying to know more about is the multiplayer. The developer has said that you can take part in multiplayer battles where you are either a team of humans trying to fight to survive, get resources, and fight off the invasion. Or, you can play as the aliens in their tripods and lay waste to the human players with your powerful and more advanced technology. This is something I am very excited about, as on paper, it sounds like the human players would not have a chance in hell, but I actually think playing as both sides here is going to be a ton of fun, as they offer such different play styles. Also, my heading of humans vs aliens made me think of the movie, Monsters vs Aliens from DreamWorks, and I feel the need to tell you to check out the Monsters vs Aliens game (the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version), as it is a real hidden gem.

American Pie

As I said, you do not have to worry about the terrible 2025 War of the Worlds movie here when it comes to the tone and setting. From what I have seen, this is going for a more classic look; it has a classic Americana look to the setting, and I think that is pretty cool. The alien tripods look awesome, and the level of destruction here is epic, but the human characters look a little odd. Not bad by any means, there is just something a little “last gen” about it if that makes sense. Still, I am really liking what I am seeing here so far, although I have not actually come across any of the horror elements that they spoke of.

Pros:

• I love the sci-fi epic this is based on
• The slice of Americana setting is cool
• You can actually play as the aliens
• I liked how it has shooting and survival gameplay

Cons:

• As of writing, the game seems a long way off
• I have not seen any of the horror elements

War of the Worlds is a first-person shooter that will take you to a world where alien invaders are methodically exterminating humanity. Will you stand up to the high-tech creatures from other planets? Survive on the planet's surface, collect garbage for sustenance and raid food depots captured by the invaders. Single-player or cooperative modes allow you to fully experience the helplessness of humanity's position against a more technologically advanced foe.
