Snipperclips

Whenever a new piece of hardware comes around, developers everywhere scramble to showcase the capabilities of any spanking new console. In Nintendo’s case, the Switch – which is posed as the ultimate device for couch co-op – has Snipperclips, which just so happens to be one of the most addictive 2-player games ever made.

Despite its apparent simplicity, Snipperclips is an engaging puzzle game that can be played and liked by anyone. In a game like this, having a difficulty level that feels just right is ideal for players of any skill level to enjoy, and that’s something that this game gets absolutely right.

Play It Together

The Nintendo Switch has been very upfront about its couch co-op supremacy. Nintendo games in general have always been a great place to start for new players thanks to their approachability and overall simplicity – but mostly because they’re insanely fun.

Snipperclips is a cooperative puzzle game where players have to help each other in order to progress through the levels. The main focus here is the game’s multiplayer modes: players take the roles of two pieces of paper that can be cut to achieve their goals.

Don’t let the multiplayer-focused formula of Snipperclips deceive you: the game can as easily be played solo. When playing alone, players can change between characters at the press of a button. This might not be as fun as playing with a friend, but at least it’s nice of Nintendo to not make the game strictly multiplayer-only.

The game serves as an excellent demonstration of what the Switch can do in today’s highly-competitive console market. In fact, Snipperclips is the Wii Sports that 1-2 Switch failed to become: a piece of software that perfectly encapsulates the design philosophy behind a hybrid console that can be played anywhere with anyone.

A Charming World

Of course, a game like this one would be nothing without a proper art style to make its cartoony world even better. Thankfully, that’s something that the Snipperclips development team paid close attention to. The whole paper-like world of Snipperclips looks a bit flat when compared to games like Yoshi’s Crafted World, but it manages to communicate the specifics of each puzzle rather well.

It takes a great deal of skill to take two pieces of paper and make them the protagonists of a game, but Snipperclips’ characters are designed to become one of Nintendo’s most charming characters since Pikmin.

As we mentioned before, the puzzles are quite varied, but they never feel too difficult. This is great for younger players who might be interested in trying the game solely based on its charming art style. It’s also great for playing with the family: something that only Nintendo knows how to do right.

9.5

Snipperclips perfectly showcases the portable co-op capabilities of the Switch. The game’s impressive multiplayer modes and its charming art style make it one of the best titles on Nintendo’s new console.

Pros

  • Engaging gameplay and fun puzzles
  • Great art style and charming character designs
  • Fun multiplayer modes; can also be played solo
  • Tons of puzzles and creative ways to solve them

Game Reviews

Snipperclips is a creative puzzle game developed by SFB Games for the Nintendo Switch. In this game, players control two paper characters who can cut each other into different shapes to solve puzzles and progress through the levels. Using scissors and tape, players can create new shapes and abilities with their characters to unlock more of the paper world around them. But that may sound a bit boring, right? Well, let’s see how this game reinvents itself into a must for every puzzle fan.

About the game

The game is centered around two characters, Snip and Clip, who are pieces of paper that can be cut and shaped to solve various puzzles. The game can be played solo or with a friend, and it requires players to communicate and work together to find solutions to the challenges presented in each level.

The puzzles in Snipperclips start off simple, teaching players the basics of creating new shapes with their characters to progress. But they gradually become more complex, requiring creative uses of shapeshifting and teamwork between the characters. There are puzzle rooms filled with mousetraps, seesaws, holes, and more that can only be navigated once the characters have been properly cut and taped together.

Engaging Gameplay

One of the most notable aspects of Snipperclips is its engaging and challenging gameplay. The game's puzzles are cleverly designed, requiring players to think creatively and work together to find solutions. Players must use their scissors to cut each other into shapes that can be used to solve puzzles, such as cutting each other into hooks to carry objects or cutting each other into shapes that can fit into specific spaces.

The game's puzzles are divided into different levels, each with its own set of challenges. As players progress through the levels, the puzzles become more complex and require more intricate solutions. This progression keeps the game fresh and exciting, as players are constantly challenged to think in new ways.

Furthermore, Snipperclips can be played both solo and with friends, making it a versatile game that can be enjoyed by a wide range of players. The game's cooperative multiplayer mode allows up to four players to work together to solve puzzles, adding an extra layer of fun and challenge to the gameplay.

Snipperclips holds a lot of potential for tool-based puzzles and combinations. The possibilities for new shapes and abilities with the characters are endless, leaving room for truly innovative solutions to even the trickiest puzzles. While the puzzles can be quite challenging, they never feel frustratingly impossible. When a puzzle stumps players, they can experiment by cutting their characters in new ways until they discover the solution.

In comparison, Snipperclips shares some similarities with puzzle games like Portal and The Swapper. Like Portal, Snipperclips focuses on using tools creatively to solve puzzles in a 3D environment. But where Portal uses sci-fi technology, Snipperclips relies on simple paper scissors and tape. The Swapper also features puzzle-solving with character shapeshifting, but Snipperclips provides even more possibilities for new creations in a whimsical paper world setting.

Review: 8.5/10

Overall, Snipperclips is a highly unique and creative puzzle game that inspiresimaginative solutions. While the puzzles can be quite difficult, they are never unreasonably impossible.

8.5

By the end of the game, players will have cut and taped their paper characters into all sorts of shapes and sizes to accomplish their goals. With its innovative premise, Snipperclips deserves an in Paper characters out of five stars.

Pros:

  • Unique gameplay mechanics
  • Charming visuals and catchy soundtrack
  • Well optimized for the Nintendo Switch
  • Provides a fun and engaging cooperative experience

Cons:

  • Levels can be frustratingly difficult at times
  • Playing solo can be less enjoyable than playing with a friend

When it comes to fun puzzle games, the Nintendo Switch has a small army of offers to provide you with. Among the most interesting releases, though, came in 2017 with Snipperclips. This puzzle game was released as a launch title for the Switch, and quickly gained a pretty impressive cult audience.

The premise of Snipperclips is pretty simple: you use the “snipping” mechanic built into the game to cut the other player into a specific shape. The co-op nature forced you both to work together to try and find the best way to work through the challenge. You basically had to try and fit the cut-out shape of the other player into the puzzle. Fun and easy enough to play, this release from SFB Games soon became a bit of a hit for those looking for an easy to play puzzle title.

An interesting and innovative puzzle game

Most puzzle games can feel a touch empty in terms of their overall personality. They tend to show all of their features within a few hours, and then it is just repetitive challenge. And while Snipperclips cannot escape that problem entirely, it is a fair bit improved from a lot of the titles who follow this process.

It has won awards for a reason – the gameplay is smooth, simple, and easy for people of all ages to enjoy playing. With the chance for up to four people to join in, too, there was ample opportunity to solve confusing puzzles. Taking on the main role of Snip and Clip, the primary game mode allowed two players to participate at once. Here, you had to basically overlap and snip the other player so that you could change their body shape, allowing them to fit through gaps, carry objects, fit into locations, or even cut a pointed shape to pop something like a balloon.

So, you had plenty of ways to stay entertained when playing Snipperclips. It might not provide the same brain challenges as something like the Professor Layton series, but it did provide something co-operatively challenging akin to Overcooked. While the gameplay might differ from both series, the puzzle-based nature ensures that Snipperclips would be a good time for most gamers.

Tricky, challenging, and rewarding puzzle fun (7/10)

While Snipperclips does nothing to really innovate on the puzzle genre, it is a tight and well made puzzle gaming experience. It is something that ensures you are able to play with people of all ages, too, with the concept both simple to pick up and difficult to master. It is a tricky game that requires plenty of logic and cunning to come through each of the challenges.

7

That being said, Snipperclips does run out of things to show you pretty fast. This can, in a way, limit the experience – though it does not mean that you cannot have incredible fun from start ‘til finish. If you are looking for a co-op puzzle game on Switch, Snipperclips is a great choice.

Pros

  • Easy to pick up and understand gameplay loop that is rewarding for players of all ages
  • Great co-op fun with some competitive modes that can add to the fun involved, too
  • Excellent range of challenges means that each level can stay fresh and fun overall

Cons

  • Shows much of its key features and puzzle styles very quickly
