Code of Princess is a hack-and-slash, side-scroller, beat ‘em up mixed with light RPG elements. Like, most games of the genre it relies on a very linear story, that doesn’t provide the opportunity for exploration, and becomes a button-mashing all-out brawl towards the end of its campaign. If you’re are interested in the genre, or have enjoyed games like Odin Sphere, Street of Rage 4, Wulverblade, Guardian Heroes, or Double Dragon Neon, chances are you’ll enjoy Code of Princess.
The Royal Redemption
Code of Princess tells the story of Princess Solange Blanchefleur de Lux after her family is wrongfully accused of an attack on their kingdom. In an attempt to clear her family’s good name, she sets out to explore the origins of the attack. To assist her on her journey she carries the Sacred Blade DeLuxcalibur sword while meeting enemies and foes alike. In this journey, you’ll also be joined by three playable characters that the princess befriends to help you achieve your goals.
Beating Them Up
The combat system here is fairly simple, you have a light attack, a heavy attack, and a special attack. On top of that they have two unique mechanics the “Burst” and the “Lock-On”, the first one happens after you string together attacks for a combo and then press “X” to release a burst of damage, the second one lets you focus/target on one enemy who will receive double the damage from normal attacks. Finally, while a side-scroller, divided into “rooms” of enemies, the combat happens in three vertical lines inside the screen, which must be jumped and altered as to dodge and re-position yourself if a particular one becomes overwhelmed with enemies.
Misfit Friends
The replayability of this game mostly relies on your desire to replay specific scenarios with different characters, as you can only use one character at a time. During the campaign, you will meet and be joined by Ali Baba the thief, Allegro the bard, and Lady Zozo the necromancer. Each of them has a unique fighting style and weapon, which adds a little nuance to try and keep combat fresh.
Code of Princess is your typical brawler/hack-and-slash game and it suffers from the same pitfalls as most of its peers (repetitive combat), but like most games of the genre, it relies on being enticing and engaging enough to warrant a single playthrough and clocking in at around ten hours of gameplay it does.
If you’re looking to play a game that doesn’t require a lot of commitment and is mindlessly entertaining Code of Princess is what you’re looking for. This game’s strongest aspects are its self-awareness, which’s reflected in the dialogues, the beautiful artwork, and the voice-acting.
Part of my desire to come back to the game was to watch the characters interact and talk to each other, the characters are compelling enough to make players curious to reach the end of the campaign.
Pros:
- Amazing Artwork
- Well-crafted characters and dialogue
- Voice-Acting
- Satisfying leveling up system
Cons:
- Repetitive Combat
- RPG Elements can go unnoticed
- Underdeveloped Story
