Swordbreaker: Origins

A nice throwback to the classic era of text-based games, Swordbreaker: Origins offers players an illustrated world of adventure and well-written stories to explore and discover. Featuring some charming comic book-styled art, the title manages to feel fresh while retaining its roots as a text-only game.

Thanks to its non-linear storytelling and vast array of possible outcomes and situations, Swordbreaker: Origins keeps things interesting for players, even on repeated playthroughs. Get ready to find some bizarre (and borderline comical) situations in this loving homage to a bygone era of gaming.

Expansive Storytelling

As the name so succinctly implies, Swordbreaker: Origins is a prequel to Swordbreaker: The Game. Both titles include many of the same gameplay mechanics – with them being interactive fiction adventures set in a fantasy world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons lore.

You play as Swordbreaker, a hero that’s destined to save the Kingdom of Dorgan. However, this game takes place long before Swordbreaker became a revered hero, and follows a much younger version of the character seen in the first game, as he lives through some daring adventures throughout the Kingdom.

Returning players from the first game will surely be pleased to get another look at the hero they know. Depending on which decision the player makes, they could essentially rewrite the origin story of the hero, perhaps even changing the context of Swordbreaker: The Game.

With eight different endings to discover – and a ton of possible bad endings waiting at every corner – the narrative possibilities of Swordbreaker: Origins are nearly endless. It's almost impossible to think up all of the ways the hero can die or how his story might change based on certain decisions.

To spice things up in your travels, you’ll find skill-based minigames. While some of them are just there as flavor text, some others require the player to pay careful attention to avoid an early end to their travels.

Comic Book Nostalgia

While it might be hard to imagine a modern game being a mere text-based adventure – the glory days of Zork1: The Great Underground Empire are long gone by now – Swordbreaker: Origins retains much of the same gameplay elements that made this type of game so popular in its heyday. Players will need to use a combination of their wits and the game’s exhaustive list of items and skills at their disposal to make it out alive.

The story itself is very well written, too. While the fact of it being a prequel to an already established story might seem constricted at first, the non-linear story and multiple narrative branches keep the story feeling fresh and unique.

One area that might be a bit divisive with fans of the first game is the game’s artwork. While it more or less retains the same style present in the first Swordbreaker game, this one looks just a bit more cartoony than its predecessor. It makes sense from a narrative point of view, however, as Origins presents a much less grandiose adventure for the Swordbreaker than we’re used to seeing.

All in all, Swordbreaker: Origins is a fun and engaging take on old-school text adventures that lives up to its predecessor’s name. You won't find any flashy graphics here, but what you will find is a compelling story that spans dozens of hours of gameplay.
