The Longest Road on Earth

The Longest Road on Earth is possibly one of the hardest games that I have ever had to talk about. Not because this is bad or anything like that, but because this is a very deep and personal kind of game that is all about the player having a connection with what they are seeing and hearing. So, this means that the experience you have with the game and the way you interpret what is going on could be radically different from the way that I do. That alone makes this one of the most interesting games to come out this year.

The Beauty Of The Mind

To start with I have to say that there is no dialogue going on here at all in The Longest Road on Earth. The whole game is played without any kind of story given to the player. Instead, we have four short stories that are very “human” in their nature riding your bike, taking in the first snowfall of the year, and so on.

The thing is, these snippets of life that we get to experience are done in a very clever way where your own mind fills in the blanks. You fill in the back story, what is going on, why they are doing what they are doing, and so on and it is amazing how different people perceive things. It makes this a great game to discuss with your friends.

Taking It All In

The whole game is probably going to take you around three hours to complete. There is no way to get a “game over” when you are playing The Longest Road on Earth. The whole game is designed with mechanics so simple that anyone no matter their skill level can pick up and play this game. It may sound like the level of interactivity here would be a drawback, but I do not think that is the case at all if I am being honest with you. In many ways, the gameplay reminds me of another game that I love, Night in the Woods.

Art!

The first thing that I ever saw in black and white that made me realize who it can be used as a strong artistic statement was Clerks by Kevin Smith in the mid-90s. Before that, I had seen stuff in black and white, but I just chalked that up to being “old” and not cool. With Clerks, it opened my eyes to have striking media that is done in black and white can be. With this game the game is not only in black and white, it is done in a very stylish pixel-art way. Things are kept simple, but that just lets the personality of the four different slices of life shine through even more. It really did blow me away and despite being very “simple” at first glance, this is the kind of game that can really strike you in the feels!

A Story In Song

Remember how I said there was no dialogue in The Longest Road on Earth? Well, what we have is a fantastic indie soundtrack that features over 24 original songs that are actually sung by one of the people responsible for the game. It is very good stuff and the way it kind of gives you an idea of the story or at the very least helps your mind fill in the blanks is really cool. As of writing, I can hand on heart say this is one of the best soundtracks any game released in 2021 is going to have.

Talking about a game like The Longest Road on Earth before everyone has had a chance to play it is really tough. Think of this as more of an “experience” than just another video game. It is the kind of game that once you have played it, you will be wanting your friends to or you will be searching online so you can communicate and share your thoughts with people who have also played the game.

Pros:

  • Four small slices of lifestyle stories to enjoy
  • This game has an amazing original soundtrack
  • I love the visuals
  • This is the kind of game that is going to be great to talk about with others

Cons:

  • I am sure this game will not “click” for others
  • Sometimes, you may wish there was just a little bit of story to push you in the right direction
