Nanashi no Game

The handheld devices such as the NDS aren’t really a widespread console for horror games, every once in a while a horror game does come up on these platforms, but it is not something most people choose to play over rewarding RPGs or racing games or platformers or a plethora of other genres that are available on those platforms.

So horror games usually go under the radar on these platforms, for example Nanashi No Game, translated into English as “The Nameless Game”. It is hard to put this game into one genre though, it is horror, but what kind of horror, is hard to put into words. There are many horror games that touch unfamiliar territories, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir being one of them with unique use of the 3DS technology. There are many elements to this game, such as 8-bit sections that are important to the plot of the game and 3D sections, so I will divide this review into the 8-bit sections of the game and the main game sections.

A CREEPYPASTA IN DISGUISE

The game’s plot revolves around a new handheld named Twin Screen, The TS is something that all of the important characters in the game have, and one day they receive a game for this console. Those that receive this game and play it will die within 7 days. If that’s not creepypasta stuff then I don’t know what is!

The game you play inside of the game is an 8-bit retro Zelda like game, but there’s not much to call gameplay in it, you just walk around and talk to characters, but that’s not the appeal of it, it starts out quite cheery and soon it starts to feel treacherous, with the happy soundtrack turning distorted and the game’s characters spouting some random things that are quite off-putting if anything.

Somehow Worse Than 8-Bit

The “real life” bits of the game, right off the bat are quite hard to enjoy. The character movement is slow and sluggish, with the graphics not being something fun to look at either. Most of the main game is played walking around and quite literally; just looking at things. Other than that, there’s answering emails, talking to people and halfway through the game, finally some action happening, not that that’s a good thing though.

Players will encounter spirits called Regrets that will instantly bring a game over screen if they come too close to the player. The game often provides clues on how to avoid them through its clever use of combining the 8-Bit and the main game, that is one of the redeeming qualities of the game, the game manages to make the 2D 8-Bit world and the main game world blend together really well to create an often times enjoyable experience.

A Short but Enjoyable Experience

Nanashi No Game (The Nameless Game) is a quite short but fun experience, the game leads the player into an absurd creepypasta premise, but it executes the premise well, combining two very different genres into one game to deliver a very cool progression system.

7

The main game’s sluggish controls and undercooked graphics and game design does bring the experience down a bit but the game’s execution of the eerie atmosphere and off-putting feeling, the developers do a stellar job of.

Pros

  • Fun and absurd premise
  • Often dumb, but off-putting combination of story and writing
  • Great blend of 8-Bit 2D and 3D gameplay
  • The writing and narrative is complimented really well by the game design

Cons

  • Sluggish and slow movements
  • Too much walking around and looking at things
  • Often dumb writing
