Video games have mastered the art of psychological horror for a long time now, and there are plenty of examples of that. Games have become one of the best, if not the best, media for creating horror content, thanks to the interaction the player has in the development. Games like Silent Hill are excellent, they really test you out for how much you can endure. And The Watson-Scott Test is literally supposed to be a test to reveal your inner fears. And while Silent Hill Shattered Memories explores a psychological test feature, it's very different from The Watson-Scott Test. So let's check it out.
Terror by text
The Watson-Scott Test is a game based entirely on text, so in a way is more like a choose your own adventure game. It emulates a psychological test where you’ll have to answer the questions prompted on the screen. As you progress you’ll find out that there’s more to it than just a simple psychological test, and that there’s something darker hiding behind it.
Beyond the screen
You’ll notice in no time that the questions get very personal, but not only that, it also breaks the fourth wall constantly. These questions are no longer just inside the game, but they are meant to scare you beyond just the game, but also in your room. It builds a great atmosphere of thrill and suspense, and you really get goosebumps, which is incredible since you’re just answering questions.
THere's a great use of sound in this game, psychological horror needs that excellent use of sound. It does a great job not only by getting you really immersed in the game experience but also in making you feel uncomfortable. It really amplifies the sensation of being watched and the feeling that there's something wrong. For the most part, it does a great job of making you feel uneasy, and that's one of the best things about this game.
The Wallace-Scott Test is an interesting concept, but it falls apart in different aspects the more you progress in the game. And that’s not saying much, considering the game is really short, probably less than half an hour long. The visuals and text are a little too edgy sometimes, and too much in-your-face.
The breaking of the fourth wall losses magic when it's so constant and direct. Even though at first it seems like a great thing, it is used too much through the short game. But all of this could be acceptable had it not been for the jump scares in the game.
It constantly uses the breaking of the fourth wall to scare you about something being near you. Maybe even in your house or in your room, and that’s excellent. But it really falls apart when at the end of the game after all that tension has been established it uses a cliche jump scare. It breaks the tension and kinda breaks the whole experience.
- Nice sound
- Builds a lot of tension
- Too short
- It falls apart quickly
