Get ready to saddle up and take to the show jumping arena or play as a wild horse in Astride. The horses are all customizable and come in an amazing variety of colors. As the icing on the cake, Astride is also multiplayer, allowing people to join others in the game.

Although Astride is playable right now, players should be aware that this is an early release. At the time there is very little to do, and players are essentially just sampling the game and testing for bugs.

Beautiful Horses

The horses are very well done in the game. The movement of the horses is reasonably realistic, although some of them do appear to move stiffly, as if they’ve got a sore back. The color choices are generous, and they even add tiny details like the pink skin around the horse’s eyes for the color cremello. The background for the horse selection area is also very detailed with pictures on the wall, and a general warm and welcome environment.

Competition for SSO?

When trailers for Astride first released, many viewers thought that Astride would completely wipe out a similar horse game, Star Stable Online. This is not the case. Although Astride has the potential to be an amazing game, it is still in a bare bones state with very little to do.

Players can currently pick out their horse and test it out on a few jumps, but it doesn’t have nearly the capabilities of Star Stable Online yet. Perhaps by the time it is completely developed, it will be competitive against SSO.

Player Feedback Welcome

Right now, players purchasing the game may be disappointed by what they receive. What is shown on the Steam page and what actually exists in the game are not the same. The steam game main page shows things that will eventually be implemented, not what is already there.

At this time there is very little to do in the game. By purchasing it you’re not so much buying the game as it is now but buying the opportunity to put in your feedback and shape the game from nearly the beginning. The game is being created by a small, indie company. It will likely be over a year before the game is in a state close to what the Steam page describes. At it’s current price point, players may have higher expectations than what is already there.

Astride needs to grow a lot before it can become a good game. It has garnered many disappointed reviews from players who have purchased it believing the hype, only to find a bare bones game with nothing there. At this time, there’s not much to do in Astride. This is not the fault of the game itself, but due to time constraints and issues in development. The bones are in place for a good game, but whether it can be achieved or not remains to be seen.
