Aspire: Ina's Tale

Lonesome and thought evoking, those are the perfect phrases to describe the experience while I spent time playing Aspire: Ina’s Tale. This title is one that is perfect for someone looking to gain a profound experience after enjoying Ina’s tale.

Story

In Aspire: Ina's Tale, you take on the role of the title character, Ina. She is a little girl who has been imprisoned in an enigmatic tower that feeds on people's imaginations. She sets off on a trip to learn who she is and the secrets of the tower after waking up. She'll come across other captives and will have to assist them in order to understand about them and their connections to both the tower and herself.

Considering Aspire: Ina's Tale is a 2D puzzle platformer similar to Limbo or Little Nightmares 2, the tale unfolds in a very organic manner. The entire game takes place within the unusual tower, which is an odd fusion of metal, stone, and live biological substance. Aside from her given name, Ina, our protagonist is also known as "the heart." This is the first indication that there is more to Ina than meets the eye, which is proven when she discovers she can harness the power of light energy.

Along the way, Ina will meet other characters, mostly fellow prisoners of the tower. Helping them escape or resolve a problem they’re having will unlock their memories, giving you a better insight into what is going on. This is how much of the story in Aspire: Ina’s Tale is revealed.

Gameplay

The gameplay itself is your basic 2D puzzle platformer affair. Ina will have to swing across chains, jump onto platforms and ledges, move heavy blocks, and activate various levers. Although, there is a somewhat unique gimmick to Aspire: Ina’s Tale, being that she can harness balls of light energy. These help her activate various moving platforms, power up flying robot allies, and illuminate areas to keep the tower’s dark creatures at bay. The puzzles are fairly straightforward for the most part, however there were a couple puzzles that id have me scratching my head for a moment. For the most part though, Aspire: Ina’s Tale isn’t a difficult game by any means.

Awesome Art Direction

The visuals are just stunning. Although the character designs and movements are not the most complicated, the color palette is colorful and energetic, and each region is visually appealing. The tower is divided into parts, each with its own individual appearance. The moments when the camera pulls back and offers sweeping, magnificent images of the tower, though, stand out. Those examples are truly magnificent and demonstrate the enormous size of the tower itself.

Magical Sound Design

As lovely as the graphic design in Aspire: Ina's Tale is, I believe the sound design is the game's strongest point. There is no voice acting because all speech is presented via text boxes, although it isn't necessary.

The sound effects are impressive, particularly the mechanical clicks and whirs of the tower's mechanics, as well as your robot guides. The monsters' growls and snarls are also frighteningly scary. The musical soundtrack, on the other hand, is the true winner here, being exquisitely atmospheric and hauntingly lovely at moments.

8

Aspire: Ina's Tale was an engrossing and enjoyable experience. That being said, don't expect it to be a joyous frolic, as the most of it is pretty gloomy. Aspire: Ina's Tale was a remarkable journey thanks to its characters, tone, setting, and music.

Pros

  • Awesome visuals
  • Beautiful sound design
  • Chill atmosphere

Cons

  • A generic platforming experience
