Young Souls

Not only is Young Souls one of the most creative and entertaining indie games of 2021: it might just be one of the best indie games ever made. The game’s clever dialogue and quirky characters turn what would otherwise be a simple hack and slash into a bona fide work of video game art.

Even though the game suffers from a distinct lack of variety in its gameplay, the captivating story and solid overall mechanics make the experience extremely enjoyable, especially for fans of the genre. However, your enjoyment of the game’s plot might vary depending on how much you enjoy its almost unhealthy dose of quips and gags.

Superpowered Twins

The game opens with the story of Jenn and Tristan: two twins whose life gets turned upside down after their entire town is set on fire. Wielding mysterious magical weaponry, the duo embarks on a journey to learn what happened to their adoptive father, the Professor.

One of the best aspects of Young Souls is how mysterious and twisty its plot is. The story keeps players invested in its twists and turns, and it’s mostly thanks to its quirky characters and its clever protagonists.

However, much like the Borderland series, your enjoyment will vary if you’re not too much into quips. This Gen-Z brand of humor ends up being very hit or miss, making some characters insufferable at times. That said, this is a hack and slash game, and as such, the action and gameplay must come before the story.

Customizable Combat

The combat in Young Souls works similarly to Indivisible, with the main difference being this game’s faster-paced action and emphasis on real-time combat rather than Indivisible’s turn-based gameplay.

While players move mostly on a 2D plane, they can also move up and down on the map in a way that seems very reminiscent of the classic Double Dragon formula. Of course, this has proved to be one of the most effective presentation for these kinds of games, as it allows players to keep a clear view of the map while making combat feel more intuitive.

Additionally, Young Souls features a great sense of style when it comes to its character and enemy designs. Jenn and Tristan, specifically, look great in their contemporary fantasy setting.

Young Souls also has some great RPG elements that make the combat and overall gameplay appear even deeper than it is. There are tons of armor pieces and weapons to collect, and each of them comes with a unique set of special bonuses and roguelike attributes.

Speaking of visuals, the game’s seemingly hand-drawn style has become somewhat a staple of modern indie games. We’ve seen it before in games like Oxenfree and Indivisible, but that’s not to say that it doesn’t work fantastically well here in Young Souls.

Every character and creature looks cartoony enough to make it look great, and every piece of armor is spectacularly well designed. Graphically speaking, the game looks great thanks to a dynamic lighting system that makes shadows look amazing contrasted with the overall simple designs.

Young Souls is a great indie hack and slash that combines the best elements of RPGs and contemporary beat ‘em ups and wraps them inside an spectacular plot that’s sure to keep you entertained all the way through.
