Waves of Steel

I was blown away when I first played Waves of Steel! This game is just insane and completely not what I expected when a friend of mine recommended this to me and all they told me was that it was a ship combat game. Now, if you are groaning about the thought of playing a “sim” style game, worry not! You see, this is more of an action and arcade style ship combat game that is completely over the top and a ton of fun. Now, as I write this, the game is still in early access so please keep that in mind.

War, What Is It Good For?

There is a story that runs through Waves of Steel and it is something that made me smile the whole time. The world is basically in danger from this evil organization that are trying to take over everything. Thankfully, we have a badass warship n the high seas and we are one of a few people fighting off these guys. The game makes each mission move the story along and it does it in a fun and easy to follow way which I liked.

The gameplay of this game completely took me by surprise. As I said, I was sure this was some kind of sim game, but it could not be any further from that. This is an action-packed style of sea combat game. Your ship controls great, is very nimble and you can even do crazy stuff like make it jump on the waves and jump over torpedoes like it is a freaking skateboard. There are a great selection of ships for you to take control of and they each have their own style and design which I love. You are basically fighting off hordes of enemy ships, planes, and more and there are even bosses, hell, you have to fight a damn volcano style ship at some point! It is just so much fun and you never know what it is going to throw your way next.

The Building Blocks Of Life!

As well as all of the action that goes down on the high seas in Waves of Steel, you also have to upgrade and tinker with your badass warship as well. Now, just like the core gameplay here, the shipbuilding, tinkering, or whatever you want to refer to it as, is simple and very easy to figure out. It is “block based” in that you just select the parts and upgrades you want and attach them. It is very easy to figure out and I like how you pick up new parts that you can use in each mission to then add to your ship once a mission is over.

The Fun Side Of War

I feel that Waves of Steel is a game that has a kind of lighthearted feel all around and this is the same kind of thing with the presentation as well. The actual water battles are very fast paced which is great as things are not all that detailed if I am being honest, but there is just so much quirkiness here that it is impossible not to smile. The characters and the story in the game are also done in a fun and amusing style too. The ship building sections are interesting in that they kind of have a design plan thing going on which I got a kick out of.

Pros:

• I love the quirky and fun story that the game tells
• The presentation has a lot of charm to it
• I liked the shipbuilding aspect of the game
• The water combat is crazy and so much fun!

Cons:

• It may not be what serious warship sim fans want or like
• The visuals on the sea are a bit on the basic side if I am being honest
