When a buddy told me about Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer's Legacy and I had a look to see what it was all about, my mind was blown. First of all, this looks freaking amazing I said to myself. However, I also was mad because I completely missed the first game! I never even heard of it, but rather than go back and play it, I decided to download the demo for this, and man, it was every bit as good as I had hoped and it is one of the surprise hits of 2022 for me.

Destroying The Staff

You get a real Legend of Zelda vibe from the way that Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer's Legacy looks, I would also throw in a bit of the recent Deaths Door there too. Anyway, the plot of the game is about a strange world full of monsters, tribes, treasure, and a magical staff. It is this staff that the plot of the game is based around, it is called the Staff of Yendor and you need to destroy it.

Exploring The Adventure

The first trailer I saw for Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer's Legacy I was sure that it would have had a deep XP system, require grinding, a million upgrades, and so on, but that is not the case here. It sounds like such a simple game, but it is way deeper than you could imagine and that is because of the very interesting roguelike elements that this game has. There will be monsters to fight, secrets to find and tribes to encounter on your way to destroy the staff.

Death Becomes You

The death system in Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer's Legacy is one of the most innovative and interesting that I have ever seen. It has a permadeath system in the game where you will die, probably many times, but you then play as a new adventurer. The twist here is that the game will jump forward a couple of years and what the previous adventure did will leave an effect on the world! I found this just a very fascinating system and it is the kind of thing that you cannot appreciate or truly understand until you have played it.

Preparing For The End

The roguelike nature of Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer's Legacy has another interesting twist for you and that relates to what happens when you get to the final dungeon/area that the game has. You know how I said you would start again as a new adventurer, well that is not the case for the final part of the game. if you die in the final part of the game, it is game over man and you have to start all over again. This sounds harsh, but man do I love this and think that it fits what they are doing with this game perfectly.

The more I think about Unexplored 2: The Wayfarer's Legacy, the more I am excited for this game to get finished so I can spend some real quality time with it. I would say that Deaths Door, The Legend Of Zelda, and maybe a bit of Hades are the best way to look at this game. The whole way it handles death is something that I just find so interesting and it makes the game even more appealing to me. It means that the choices you make when you play can have either a positive or negative consequence for when you start your next round as a new adventurer!

Pros:

  • I really like the death system that this game has
  • That final level is going to be so intense and a true test of your skill
  • I love the interesting world that they have created here
  • I think that they have taken the best bits from other games and sprinkled their own magic on top

Cons:

  • I am not sure how deep the story of the game is actually going to be
  • I can see some people not liking the death system
