What would happen if you took post-apocalyptic societies underground? UnderRail is a game that aims to present all the possibilities in an immersive, isometric RPG format. Set in a world where planet Earth has become inhabitable, communities are forced underground to slowly deteriorate into eternal conflict.

The concept of UnderRail is nothing new, but the focus of customizable gameplay seeks to bring out the real nitty-gritty of underground life. The whole idea of taking control of your fate in a universe filled with internal and external stresses seems a little bit intriguing, to say the least. I mean, how would you succeed when there's no hope?

Taking Your Problems Underground

UnderRail begins by instantly setting an homage to classic isometric RPGs. You'll be creating a character with a unique avatar, statistics, and lore. Then suddenly, you'll be thrown into a world where humans live in underground metro stations - serving as the base of somewhat tribal conflicts amongst societies.

It's already clear from the get-go that UnderRail is quite an ambitious project - but players will notice its small-team limitations quickly. Interfaces and visuals seem a bit lacking in setting the scene for a post-apocalyptic world, as well as the cluttered environments players find themselves in. It could be argued that it's intentional to relate to similar past games - in reality, it feels like a combover.

Let's give credit to the mechanics, however. The saving grace of UnderRail is the extensive possibilities in customization and crafting, making for a more intriguing experience. There are no pre-defined classes, and turn-based combat does engage pretty thoroughly. Despite the lacking visuals, the lore and narrative of UnderRail do push players enough to want to discover the outcomes.

The main problem with UnderRail is it feels like it is lacking. It is a small development team that worked on the game. But the issue is with grander projects is there can be many holes in the gameplay. The concept is fantastic - but the entire journey is full of potholes. At points, the game gets so bumpy that you are inclined to get frustrated - rather than enjoy the world around you.

Think I'll Go To Another Shelter

It's hard to really describe where UnderRail sits on how players would perceive this game. Some would argue that this is a fantastic homage to the Fallout franchise - and the flaws enhance its gameplay rather than detract from it. Others would say that UnderRail is downright frustrating. Unfortunately, I'd be inclined to side with the latter.

5

You get stuck into UnderRail with the intentions of liking the game no matter what - but the shortcomings don't facilitate that notion. We have a project full of potential, struck by the lack of polish and gaping holes in the gameplay. However, ff you're a cult RPG gamer - I would actually recommend it. If not, try other isometric RPGs.

Pros:

  • Extensive customization to tell your story in the world
  • The fun turn-based combat system
  • The narrative that is shaped heavily on player choices

Cons:

  • Visuals and UI are lacking, don't set the scene for the lore
  • The game feels purposeless much of the time
  • The gameplay feels broken in many areas
