Black Legend

There are two ways we can decipher the name Black Legend. The first being the representation of a tale that demonizes a nation or person. The other being the name of an RPG that obsesses with the occult. Here, we'll analyze that later version, but we can't forget that the former has a significant meaning in the world of this game.

Black Legend is a turn-based RPG set in a city that remarkably resembles the Spanish Inquisition. You'll arrive in this 17th-century city to rid of the mist that seems to be turning everyone into raving lunatics. It's the traditional RPG hero cycle with dark undertones. Yep, we've definitely been here before. Is Black Legend going to do anything differently?

Go On and Humor Me

Oh, how pretty Black Legend looks. The city of Grant features the color palettes and models that bring this dark livelihood into the fray. The mercenary characters in your party look great with all the customizable features to keep them fascinating. The combat presents as intriguing, and the premise of the narrative is exciting. What a shame that nothing about this game works.

Black Legend is a prime example of what happens when overzealous RPG ideas get lost in delivering a refined gameplay experience, starting from the very core mechanics. Even the elementary aspects such as animations, dialogue, and movement go awry - emanating more frustration than the intended immersion of the narrative.

The game has a nice coat of paint in presenting a lovely UI with all the customization and skill options. There is simply no reward in progression and development, though. Players will traverse the game fighting the same turn-based battles with the same skill sets and bland weaponry. Irritations arise further when tactical approaches are hindered by buggy blockages in movement.

Not only this, the presentation of all the tactical terminology is a task in itself to figure out. It's like the developers just gave up in explaining how their outlandish battle system works. Using humor to convey strategy? These words referring to essential items in combat? Absolutely no idea. The only incentive to carry on is just to explore the town.

Who Said the Inquisition Was a Good Thing?

It's safe to say that Black Legend is one of the most confused RPGs on the market. While we don't know for sure, this game seems like the byproduct of something that's been through development hell. There appears to be interchanging ideas on presenting every aspect of the game - the only agreed concept was the universe it's set in.

We question how the game arrived in this state when there are so many similar games to aspire to. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a prime example of creating a tactical RPG with a rich universe and seamless mechanics. Black Legend decided to wander into the forest on its own and come out a nervous wreck. If you enjoy conceptualizations of 17th-century worlds, explore for a little bit, then leave. Other players, forget it.

Pros:

  • The 17th-century world makes an intriguing environment for the narrative
  • Nice looking customization screens

Cons:

  • The game feels broken in nearly every aspect
  • Combat is bland and uninteresting
  • The narrative doesn't excite, not provide any reward to playing
