Monsters' Den: Godfall

Monsters' Den: Godfall is an indie dungeon crawler RPG that I got well and truly addicted to. The fact that this was made by just one dude is insane to me. It has a high-level of polish that some higher-budget dungeon crawlers do not come close to matching. If you like dungeon crawlers then this is one game that you have to give a try.

The Godfall

I do not think that Monsters' Den: Godfall is all that story-driven, but I do like the premise here. A war was waged on heaven and with each “Godfall” things got worse and worse. There was one left ruling the Earth and mankind become, well wicked. Now, five years after the last Godfall, you lead a team of warriors to try and turn the tide. I think there is a great premise here, but I do wish that it went a bit more in-depth. What is here is kind of hard to follow, but you do get the general idea.

Old-School With The Heart Of An Artist

The presentation of this game is two-fold. The actual dungeons are done in a very late 80s and early 90s kind of style and that is something I really do dig. It may seem a tad zoomed out, but I do like this as it lets you see the dungeon in all its glory. The turn-based battles that the game has are done in a very interesting way. At first glance, they may seem like they are also done in that same retro style.

However, the characters, monsters, and so on are done with some fantastic art that looks like it was drawn by a top-tier fantasy artist. I was very impressed with the way that this game looked.

Monsters Den In 3D

I have heard of this series before, but Monsters' Den: Godfall is actually the first game I have played myself. You will need to venture into various dungeons to fight enemies collect loot and so on. There are tons of missions in the game, but it is the side missions you have to do. If you just try and do the primary missions, you will be eaten alive. Taking part in the secondary missions is key as that is where you get experience, loot and so on to help you progress through the game. While this is a dungeon crawler, you do get to venture on top of the land so that you can move to areas.

I like this and think that it is pretty neat and not something too many other dungeon crawlers offer. The turn-based battles the game has are very strategy-driven and require you not to just have the right loot and gear, but also know what you are doing in battle.

I get that some people may find the learning curve Monsters' Den: Godfall has to be way too much and I get that. However, if you are willing to stick with the game and learn what to do then this is a very rewarding experience. I think that it is the kind of game where the more you put into it, the more you are going to get out of it. As someone who loves dungeon crawlers, this was a game that I had a lot of fun with.

Pros:

  • The game is very deep
  • I think that the idea of the story being told here is really cool
  • The turn-based combat in the game is hard, but also very rewarding
  • Getting new loot and gear is something I found very addictive

Cons:

  • This game does have a very steep learning curve
  • I may have been missing something, but I wish the story was explained more
