Colony Ship

Nothing excites us sci-fi fans like the potential to craft our own space opera. Colony Ship aims to bring players a nostalgic experience through the medium of an isometric RPG. Because everyone has an intergalactic story to tell. This turn-based game will tap into your prowess as a leader to bring harmony to your traveling space party.

While still in early access - there already feels like there's a good concept brewing. The narrative revolves around a colossal ship traveling to distant planets post-future - where most of society has never set foot on a planet. What's more interesting, you will not live to see your destination either. So what will you be doing in this twilight time of the ship's travel?

Proxima Centauri is the Nearest Star

The most fascinating thing about Colony Ship is this narrative that does so much with such a limited environment. That in its own right is pretty impressive- how it sets the scene and underlines the core mechanics of the game. We'll give you the foundations of the lore - you are a player born on a generation ship torn apart by civil war. While there's a journey to Proxima Centauri in progress, survivors will never see it.

You can imagine what kind of strife would cause the ranks. And thus sets a dark tone. The visuals of The Ship and characters really resonate with that downtrodden, story-laden feel. The colossal vessel is basically a hyper condensed town traveling through the stars at a glacial pace - providing its residents with a dystopian, cyberpunk vibe.

Colony Ship is an homage to all our favorite sci-fi isometric RPGs, taking more loose features to facilitate a more unique experience for players. Turn-based combat will be met with custom-managed statistics, dialogue branching, and shaping quest lines. It all seems like it has real potential to deliver on a classic RPG game.

The game, as mentioned, is in early access. Already it can definitely use some work in the mechanics. The world-building and lore are nothing short of brilliant, but the experience is hindered by combat difficulty. Let's not forget that abrupt ends can come from making what would seem like irrelevant decisions. It makes Colony Ship more frustrating than frightening. When there is such rich lore - you'd probably want to make it more accessible.

Going Somewhere for Something Going Nowhere

There's a reminiscence about the Shadowrun games when playing through Colony Ship - yet it harnesses the difficulty of Dark Souls. Whether this is intentional or not, a better player experience would come with dialing the punishment down. Colony Ship's story and environments are spectacular - there is a lot of potentials for the game to be a winner.

Heading to full release - the developers might want to consider their player base. The whole story bases around players knowing they will never see another planet. Therefore, the reward system is more significant than ever. Make Colony Ship a little less aligned to the demands of hardcore RPG players, and we might have something that could thrive as a classic.

Pros:

  • Beautiful visuals create a rich environment for the narrative
  • Exemplary of how much can be done with small spaces
  • Excellent character building and dialogue mechanics

Cons:

  • Combat seems unwinnable in a lot of battles
  • Decisions can have dire effects on gameplay
  • The overall difficulty will frustrate most players
