When we set up our lives and settle down in our town of choice, we all want to make sure that the place we choose is safe above all else. After all, no one wants to have danger right at their front doorstep. Having a sense of pride in your town is key to keeping it a safe and happy place to live. For Tina and Celice, they face this same dilemma as their town of Durham has seen a spike in crime and they want to get to the bottom of it. Little do they know the dangers that await them on their quest or the old foes waiting in the shadows to make their task all the more difficult. This is our review of Tina: Swordsman of the Scarlett Prison.

This game plays rather like any classic turn-based RPG title such as Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy, however, you’ll be treated to a number of unique CG's, X-rated scenes and a much more mature story that will focus on lust and your power to control your urges. It’s a classic JRPG adventure with an adult twist.

Gameplay is Basic At Best

While it is always commendable when an adult-themed game aims to be more than a glorified visual novel, this game seems to offer some of the most lifeless gameplay possible. You’ll have scenes where you will have to explore with a top-down perspective akin to that of Pokémon. However, the player feels like they are constantly on rails only offering the illusion of an expansive and explorable world. Then, in addition, the combat is laughably simple. The player will have a very limited set of attacks to use and the enemies you encounter will not vary too much throughout your run. Meaning that the need for tactics and planning for each battle is negated entirely.

The saving grace is through the games narrative sections. You’ll meet a number of truly unique and interesting characters throughout your journey. Each with their own quirks and motives and this will lead to the battles have a much more emotional effect on the player. The combat may fall flat on occasions but the story is enough to carry you through these sections.

Artistically Astounding

This game really understands what makes a top-down JRPG look visually appealing to the player and provides a series of really interesting areas that are vibrant and full of detail. The character models are fantastically detailed, the enemy models when in battle are stunning, the animations are slick and varied. Then in addition to all of this, there are Fifty unique CG's that look absolutely stunning.

The manga-inspired visuals are very well drawn and implemented into the game, with an art style that stands out from the generic anime rip off titles out there. Each character feels unique due to their facial features, their intricate costumes and the variety of facial expressions that the artist conveys.

A Beautiful Mess

Tina: Swordsman of the Scarlet Prison is a game that looks the part, has all the potential to be a smash hit and ultimately fails to live up to that potential. The storyline isn’t the most innovative one that you will ever see but it is told well and has enough twists and turns to keep the player pushing forward. Plus, it’s very easy to fall in love with this well-designed world and brilliantly designed characters. The key issue, however, is the gameplay and how pacing, combat and exploration are poorly implemented into this title. For those that enjoyed the game, you’ll have the joy of playing as an alternative character for added replay value.

Though, we would assume that after one playthrough, you’ll have seen enough. In short, a game that looks for all the world like it will be a blast from start to finish but in the end, a game that will leave you a touch disappointed.

Pros

  • The fantastic art style and CG's
  • Well written narrative
  • Replay value through alternative characters

Cons

  • Combat is basic and forgettable
  • Exploration is non-existent due to linear design
