If you’re looking for a game that fulfills the Samurai fantasy, you’re looking in the right place. Sorta… The Misty Tale is an ambitious project from an indie developer that provides some fun concepts. However, that doesn’t absolve it of the glaring flaws that are apparent in a playthrough.

Single player adventures seem to slowly phase out of focus in the lens of AAA studios. Today, only a handful of titles don’t seem to be headed in the direction of “games as a service”. To keep the spirit of single player, story-based games, indie studios have begun to step up to the plate. One thing is for sure though, single player gaming is not dead. In The Misty Tale, you’ll get to experience a game that provides a melancholic story that keeps you calm even through the electrifying combat.

The gorgeous landscapes are filled with a level of ambience that puts you into a level of immersion that’s hard to replicate in other titles. Beautiful genomes, awesome skies and a sweet, soft soundtrack will accompany you throughout this adventure, letting you bask in the fantasy of this world. Similar to how the new God of War game is, The Misty Tale features a third person perspective with runic elements scattered around the world.

Story

The Misty tale is a third-person fantasy adventure game that puts you in the shoes of a mercenary swordsman who was caught in a terrible storm on a broken mast that is about to crumble. The current of this storm leads you to a foggy group of islands with an air of mystery around. As you explore and progress in the story, you’ll discover that it is your duty to find and remove the runes found around the world in The Misty Tale. These runes are useful for taking advantage of your abilities and providing an edge in combat.

The runic elements are also reminiscent of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, another indie title. But The Misty Tale lacks the core level of depth found in that game.

Gameplay

Probably the biggest highlight of this title, The Misty Tale features a smooth and ambitious combat system for an indie game. Without a doubt, it’s easy to notice what the first idea for this game was. Everything in this title was probably conceptualized after the combat. It’s a fully fleshed out combat system that features parries, dodges abilities and smooth animations.

If you’ve played a title like Sekiro, you’ll be able to easily come to grips with this combat system. It’s one that requires precision and opportunistic gameplay to succeed. Here, you’ll encounter enemies with lightning fast fighting tactics. To counter them, you’ll need to consistently get your timing right. Don’t worry, as you progress through the game, you’ll quickly find yourself developing the muscle memory to get you through the seemingly difficult fights.
