The king of rail shooters is back with Time Crisis 5 – the culmination of the series in terms of gameplay and tech progress. Featuring some impressive visuals and the same spectacular shooting mechanics we’ve come to expect from the franchise, this is an arcade game that’s absolutely worth your time; and your coins.

When it comes to a Time Crisis game, players have come to expect a certain degree of tactical action mixed in with the usual point and shoot segments. This game delivers in that regard, too, essentially turning this game into the series’ magnum opus.

Think Fast, Shoot Faster

The “Time” part of Time Crisis 5’s name is essential to understanding just how important fast-paced action is for this series. While most other on-rail shooters like House of the Dead will have players focusing on getting the higher score they can, Time Crisis has always been about getting the best time and score possible for each stage.

This translates into less time spent in cover and more fast-paced shooting. Keep in mind that abusing the spray and pray tactic is a great way to get you killed, especially when the AI is as advanced as it is in Time Crisis 5. Indeed, the first thing you’ll notice when you start playing this game is how different it feels from your average arcade shooter.

Thankfully, the game’s smooth controls and sensitive aiming allows players to effortlessly rush their way across each of the three stages. Don’t let the number of stages disappoint you, though: each of them is long enough to be enjoyable in short, arcade-sized bursts.

Next-Gen Arcade Experience

It used to be the norm that arcade cabinets displayed some of the most visually striking games in the market. As consoles began getting cheaper and stronger, the divide between them and arcade cabinets got procedurally smaller. Time Crisis 5 is the natural conclusion of the evolution in cabinets, thanks to the impressive visuals that only the Unreal Engine can deliver.

Graphics look crisp and character models look generations ahead of their predecessors. While some elements of the environment might look a bit blocky, they don’t get in the way of the overall presentation, and also do wonders to differentiate the enemies from the terrain.

Shooting, Japanese Style

We’d venture to say that no one plays on-rail shooters for the plot anymore. Ever since The House of the Dead 2 set a new standard for dubious voice acting, these kinds of games have been known for not taking themselves too seriously. Time Crisis 5 is no exception, featuring an almost nonsensical over the top plot with tons of cheesy dialogues.

Along with the cheap plot, the voice acting is also appropriately outlandish. Thankfully, the character designs are also somewhat unconventional for a shooter, so don’t expect any of the usual complexities seen in Western shooters here. This is great for gamers just looking to have a great time without any sort of higher narrative getting in the way; or for fans of action B-movies.
