The Last Crown: Blackenrock

The Last Crown: Blackenrock is the third game in the series which started all the way back in 2008! This one brings more of the ghost hunting and spooky goings-on from the small English village that seems to have a lot of paranormal activity going on. If you like ghost stories and point and click style adventure games, you are going to get a real kick out of what this is offering.

The Haunting Mystery of Blackenrock

As you would expect from a point-and-click adventure game, The Last Crown: Blackenrock is very story-driven so I do want to be careful about what I say here. Nigel Danvers is the best damn ghost hunter around and he has had a strange feeling about a place called Blackenrock. The game takes place in the spooky English coastal village known as Saxton, but Nigel and his fellow ghost hunter, Lucy will have to head out to sea to truly solve this grisly mystery of what is going on.

What I love about the story here is that it is not taking itself too seriously. There is a fair bit of camp here and that is something that I do like. Still, this can send the odd shiver down your spine so be prepared to have more than a few jump scares as the story moves on!

Who You Gonna Call?

I have said a few times now that The Last Crown: Blackenrock is a point-and-click adventure-style game and that really is the best way to describe it. What I love though are the ghost-busting items you have. You may not have an unlicensed nuclear proton pack on your back, but you do have other cool stuff that can help capture images of ghosts and communicate with them.

You have to talk to the townspeople, solve puzzles and get to the bottom of the mystery. Some of the stuff can be a bit on the cryptic side, but that is by design. You are supposed to be an investigator so you will have to do some research and examine the things you find and uncover. The exploration is great as the game is played from both a first-person and third-person point of view.

The Camera Obscura

I have to say that visuals are probably not the strongest thing that The Last Crown: Blackenrock has going on. The character models look like they are from a game that was made around ten years ago. They do not spoil the game or anything like that, but they do kind of stick out. What the game does very well is create a very creepy and spooky atmosphere! I love when you use the camera and get a glimpse of a ghost, or when you go to a new area to explore and a shadow makes you jump.

The Haunted Sound

I love the soundtrack as it is very creepy and fits the visuals and story of the game very well. It has some solid British voice acting too. Why is it that a posh British voice always sounds way scarier than any other kind of accent? The sound design is actually one of the main things that is going to creep you out as you play through this game.

If you like scary stories and the macabre, The Last Crown: Blackenrock is a game for you. Even though this is the third game in the series, you do not need to have played the others to jump in here. It is its own contained story and it is a pretty damn good one too that kept me guessing all the way to the end. It does have some of your typical point-and-click adventure-style game trappings, but for the most part, this is a fun ghostly experience that is sure to get under your skin!

Pros:

  • I loved the setting of the game
  • If you enjoy ghost and scary stories, you will get a real kick out of this
  • I enjoyed how creepy the environments were
  • That British voice acting sure does add to the creepy vibe!

Cons:

  • The character models feel like they are from a much older game
  • Some of the puzzles can be very obscure and hard to figure out
