Muv-Luv Unlimited: THE DAY AFTER - Episode 00 is a visual novel that works as a stand alone for the original series. It features a completely new cast of characters, following a different, tragic storyline. The visual novel is in essence about how good people are trying to make the best out of a very bad hand, and the growth that comes from disaster.

A very glitchy experience

One of the major changes this visual novel has made from the original content was to change to a new engine to power the game. Unfortunately, this new engine is full of problems and makes it difficult to enjoy the storyline.

The game is stripped of a lot of features, and the text itself is very minimal and cheap looking. Full screen mode, auto play, and even the menu also have regular issues and fail to work properly.

Okay graphics and sound

In keeping with Muv-Luv Unlimited: Alternative, the graphics on this game aren’t much. They’re nice, but they don’t stun you like the art in Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms does. It isn’t ugly, and it gets the job done, but it isn’t something you’d read just for the beauty of the art either. One exception to this is the detail in the mechs. Muv-Luv has always shined in the area of mech detailing, and here they once again make an effort to put a lot of detail into their machines.

The sound for the novel is good, but gets repetitive after you have heard the loop a few times. All together, the experience is fine but nothing special.

Best story telling out there

While it’s impossible to talk about the story of The Day After without spoiling Alternative, the storyline more than makes up for the so-so graphics and glitchy engine. This is one of the darkest points in the entire series, and the mood is beautifully captured in the story line and the people caught up in it.

The story begins shortly after Operation Babylon, and is mainly about two characters, Will and Lilia, who are stranded on it. This is a very short story with the main focus being between the two characters, but towards the end you get a lot more action. If you’re looking for a powerful story line that moves you, this is a great choice, and holds nothing back from what we have come to love about this universe.

Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After, beautifully fills in a long gap in the storyline of this universe, and even the alternative. If you’re a big fan of the universe, this visual novel is a perfect experience to help add details to the world.
