Street Fighter X Tekken, pronounced "Street Fighter Cross Tekken," stands as a remarkable fusion of two legendary fighting game franchises: Capcom's Street Fighter and Namco's Tekken. Released in March 2012, this crossover title brings together iconic characters from both universes for intense tag-team battles in a dynamic 2D fighting arena. With its recent remaster, the game has undergone significant enhancements, delivering an even more immersive and visually stunning experience.

Gameplay

The core gameplay is reminiscent of the Street Fighter series, blending it seamlessly with elements from the Tekken series. Players choose two fighters from the roster and engage in tag team battles using the Street Fighter 4’s six-button system. However, Tekken characters can execute Tekken 5’s combos using four primary buttons. The game emphasizes the tag team mechanic, allowing players to switch between characters mid-combo and execute devastating Cross Rush combos. The Cross Gauge fills up during combat, enabling players to perform various techniques such as EX Attacks and Super Arts. Unique to Street Fighter X Tekken is the Gem System, where players can equip gems to enhance their characters' abilities, and the Pandora Mode, which grants a temporary boost in power at the expense of sacrificing a teammate.

Street Fighter X Tekken delivers an exhilarating crossover experience, blending the best elements of two legendary fighting franchises. With its deep gameplay mechanics, diverse roster, and engaging storyline, it offers endless hours of fun for fans of both series.

Visuals

Street Fighter X Tekken boasts impressive visuals, especially after its remaster, which elevates the graphics to a new level of polish and detail. Character sprites are beautifully animated, capturing the essence of each fighter's signature moves with fluidity and finesse. From Ryu's iconic Hadouken to Kazuya's devastating Mishima-style combos, every attack is rendered with stunning visual fidelity. The vibrant backgrounds transport players to dynamic arenas filled with bustling crowds, bustling cityscapes, and exotic locales, adding depth and immersion to the gameplay experience. The attention to detail in character designs and animations brings the beloved fighters to life in stunning high-definition, making each battle a visually captivating spectacle that showcases the best of both the Street Fighter and Tekken universes.

Story

The game's plot revolves around the discovery of a mysterious object known as "Pandora" that crash-lands in Antarctica. This object amplifies conflict between beings, releasing a potent energy that enhances their abilities. The Street Fighter and Tekken universes collide as fighters vie for control of Pandora, each with their own motivations and rivalries. Specific character pairings, like Ryu and Ken or Kazuya and Nina, have unique storylines and rival battles.

Game Reviews

With Street Fighter X Tekken, the 2012 crossover title developed by Capcom, we finally get to see who would win in a fight between the biggest names in both series. With an impressive number of characters and an intriguing enough plot for a fighting game, does Street Fighter X Tekken deliver on its interesting premise?

An intriguing crossover with a high pay-off

As two of the most popular fighting game series of all-time, both Street Fighter and Tekken have fans all over the world. therefore, it made obvious sense that one day we would see Ryu face off against Jin. Most of the time, crossover fighting games such as Injustice can begin to feel a little odd. Sometimes, other games such as Marvel vs Capcom feel like a good excuse to throw two licenses together for a laugh. With Street Fighter X Tekken, though, the infusion of a semi-coherent plot means that both worlds feel like they could legitimately exist at the same time.

The use of a Gem system included helped to utilise the use of specialised gems to power up characters and give them augmented strength and power. The game itself was known for having a very impressive range of character mechanics, too, ensuring that its deep number of characters never felt too generic, bloated, or similar to one another. Core gameplay and design was far more similar to Street Fighter than Tekken, with the latter feeling like the guest in a Street Fighter game as opposed to the other way around. The interesting character designs paired with the quality art design helped to create a very intriguing fighting game overall.

A fine example of crossovers that can work (8/10)

With a hugely significant roster that included the biggest and best from all of the games, there was huge interest in what the game would be like. Some worried that two similar yet unique series might not meld together well, and that characters would feel out of place. Most of these concerns, though, were seen to be out of place.

The addition of some guest characters such as Pac-Man and Mega Man made for an intriguing line-up, too. Overall, the reception was a positive one, with most critics feeling like the game managed to take some pros of both series and create an outstanding little fighter. It was seen as one that had a high skill ceiling with a low floor, ensuring that everyone could enjoy hitting out with massive combinations and attacks.

8

The game was critiqued for its poor DLC layout, the gem system, and various other challenges in bringing the story together. Though better than most expected, poor sales ratings meant that for the most part Street Fighter X Tekken was unable to build the legacy that most would have hoped for.

Pros:

  • Deep character rosters that come with depth and detail
  • Intriguing storyline that is more detailed than expected
  • Great combination system and deep, stylish visuals

Cons:

  • Gem system was confusing and most found it too weighted
  • Controversial DLC system left some fans disappointed
