I'll go ahead and say first that Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel makes no sense to me. That is in part to the fact that I have never immersed myself in visual novels. However, that means that we can have a fresh approach to the game. So is this battle royale collective one that is going to impress the masses?
'Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel is a fighter game that adopts a roster of heroines from the Nitroplus visual novels. The concept is intriguing considering that it's not often you see characters from a genre like this come together in a holistically engaging format. Whether you approach the game as a developer's fan or with inklings of curiosity, there should be something to tickle fancy.
Heroines on Call
Without prior knowledge of the game's lore, first impressions dictate that Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel is a decent fighting game. The visuals are colorful, and the animations bring a diverse set of characters to life. Not to mention, the battle mechanics are intuitive while also challenging. It will surprise anyone blissfully unaware of the Nitroplus visual novels.
The game features 32 characters split into the playable and support categories. The gameplay is introduced with a palatable control schematic that divides buttons into light, medium, and heavy attacks - with the additional escape actions. While simple on the surface, users can enjoy the easy-to-learn, hard-to-master mechanical approach.
The combat is entertaining and satisfying but doesn't offer anything we haven't seen before from other fighters. It leads to the idea that this fighter was made to appease fans of the Nitroplus visual novels. However, it doesn't stray so far into the lore that it's inaccessible to other players. Quite the contrary, actually. There does seem like a conscious effort to bring other players on board.
Perhaps it's to introduce Nitroplus to a new audience? Well, it is a sleek and stylish fighter - but nothing revolutionary. It will still be hard to convince fighting game enthusiasts to get involved with Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel over other revered franchises. After all, there's only so much enjoyment you can pull out of a standard fighter.
A Smooth Blast from Start to Finish
The polished gameplay serves as a real winner to both Nitroplus fans and outsiders. The smooth battles and intuitive gameplay are satisfying amongst the plethora of available characters. Nitroplus Blasterz: Heroines Infinite Duel faces the same issues as another battle royale's like Person 4 Arena, though. Ultimately, it's the same fighting experience, just with different characters.
That's not to say it's not worth playing, though. Translating visual novel characters into a fully-fledged battle arena is an intriguing premise on its own. It would require a lot of thought and good design decisions to give life to static characters. The developers have managed to do the job well, albeit the end result is a standard fighter.
- A sleek and stylish fighter with plenty of appeals
- There's a decent roster of characters to play
- Accessible to players who haven't played the visual novels
- Doesn't differ much mechanically from other battle royale fighters
- Some characters are a little cringeworthy
- Not much narrative to help players understand the Nitroplus lore
