SteamWorld Heist II takes you through a fast-paced adventure across the Great Sea with the notorious Captain Leeway and his troupe of steambots. Jump into a steampunk turn-based strategy where you get to engage in thrilling ricochet gunfights, customize your crew, and battle against a looming water crisis.
Strategic gameplay combines in real time with ship-to-ship combat to create a unique blend of variety. As a player of the first SteamWorld Heist, I was excited to dive into some new twists this sequel would add, and boy, am I not disappointed! This is a larger, more epic adventure than I was expecting – with the usual SteamWorld flair you know and (hopefully) love.
From the very start, SteamWorld Heist II drags you in with charming characters and an engaging plot. This is a way back to the approachable and hand-drawn feel of the first but comes loaded with fresh settings and an immersive soundtrack by Steam Powered Giraffe.
The story will charm you, both with humor and a sense of familiarity, as you try to unravel the mystery of the deadly waters.
Mastering the Ricochet
SteamWorld Heist II has turn-based shootouts at its core. It is precision and strategy together that are at the heart of these battles. This game comes with a rather Lacrimal free-aiming mechanic, where bullets can, at will, be bounced off walls, obstacles, and things to offer creative and really satisfying shots.
This ricochet gameplay is an interesting addition, as it drastically raises the fun factor in every encounter and goes a long way in attributing complexion to these otherwise very basic combat encounters.
Contrasted with Mark of the Ninja, where players engage in a really stealthy and not-so-sloppy role, SteamWorld Heist II tends to lean more towards the shot-bouncing, which makes things a little special across the board within the tactical genre.
Making Your Ideal Team
A characteristic that really separates SteamWorld Heist II from many others is the depth of options available when it comes to customizing. You'll be able to outfit your crew, as a captain, with varied weapons and utility items, along with ship equipment that permits you to tinker with abilities toward any play style.
The rich job system allows a wide variety of strategies from aggressive assaults to covering defensive maneuvers. Such customization makes it similar to games like XCOM, in which the creation of the correct team can be the defining difference between success and failure.
Navigating the Great Sea
SteamWorld Heist II expands on its predecessor by providing actual, real-time ship fighting and exploration. Sailing the Grand Sea, you will battle ships, raid enemies in their bases, and find hidden treasures.
Naval encounters add a dynamic layer of gameplay, breaking turn-based missions with action. This is stuff right here, reminding one of Sid Meier's Pirates! It tells a tale of adventure and discovery on the open ocean.
This smooth transition from turn-based combat to solid real-time naval battles keeps the action fluent and so uniquely different that there is not even one dull moment in it.
SteamWorld Heist II is the kind of sterling sequel needed to build on the strong suits of the original with new mechanics and a richer narrative to sweeten the deal even more.
Pros
- The ricochet mechanic is addictive and satisfying to pull off
- Deep customization options
- Immersive world and narrative
