Solasta: Crown of the Magister

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a CRPG (Computer Role-Playing Game) that draws heavily from the classic turn-based, group activity, tabletop role-playing sessions. Developed and published by Tactical Adventures in October 2020, the game was met with generally positive reviews, among critics and players alike.

Highly praised for its fidelity to the tabletop Dungeons & Dragons franchise, and classic RPG rules, Solasta: Crown of the Magister found a faithful following by introducing the rules and mechanics you would find in a session on a friends basement in digital format.

Only as Good as The Master

Solasta: Crown of the Magister tells the story of an organization that represents the interest of diverse factions from the entire realm of Solasta. This organization, in an effort to investigate an overwhelmed fort at the frontier of a place called Badlands, stumbles upon the Crown of Magister, a legendary artifact.

You and your party, the Deputies of the Council, are the ones that find this artifact and recognize that the crown is not as it was once described, a crown imbued with magical jewels powerful enough to open holes through reality itself.

As a linear adventure Solasta: Crown of the Magister makes great use of world-building, puzzles, and exploration to maintain the game fresh. Character development is also a very extensive part of the game, with countless customization options for players to immerse themselves in, the system is so intricate that even personality traits are involved in creating a character. Ultimately, the story isn’t the best part of the game, weirdly phrased dialogues, sub-par voice performances, and unoriginal script are hard to overlook, yet the game’s strengths still overshadow its weaknesses.

Complex Rules, Made Simple

Anyone who remembers their first steps into RPGs, or tried and failed to join the community, learning every single interaction, play, action, and intricacies of the tabletop classic is one of the biggest deterring factors for a newcomer’s relationship with the genre. Here is where Solasta: Crown of the Magister’s most notable virtue is the simplicity with which it translates complex, detailed, and often confusing concepts from the original role-playing games such as spell-selection, resting, dice rules, and all the nuances that enrich the genre.

The fun in Solasta: Crown of the Magister relies heavily upon its combat style, which albeit heavily tactical, still looks pretty. Obviously, following strict rules from D&D, won’t allow for the same amount of creativity as other titles - that don’t follow the same rules, however, the turn-based tactical challenges are always present and demand the player to think through every action, as to not waste any turn. Utilizing every class, and their strengths is a skill that will develop in time, but since combat is the biggest part of the game, even things as taking advantage of the environment will come naturally.

Summary

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is not the most impressive, creative, or well-written CRPG we have seen in recent memory, but it is probably the most faithful depiction of the classic tabletop D&D, RPG style to date.
