Scrap Games

You might be excited to hear about Scrap Games if you want to rekindle the classic arcade side-scrollers with a modern edge. The title brings back the foundations of beat-em-ups, assigning players a character who you'll walk around and test your might against legions of foes simply trying to put you in your place. It's simple gameplay reincarnate and could be massive for old-school gamers.

Scrap Games is set in a sci-fi world where robots are kings, but the who, why, where, and what seems to be lacking. Those are answers unveiled when you progress through the game. Or the title is just a platform for nostalgic gamers to get back to classic arcade gameplay and showcase their cognitive abilities with cool-looking robots. It's a game that's undoubtedly under the radar but still interesting for a niche player base.

Mechanical Fury

There's something Scrap Games doesn't do very well from the beginning, and it's set the scene of why you're inheriting these robots to fight in the streets of god-knows-where. You'll be dropped into the streets of what looks to be a near-future city, prodded to move forward and fight opposing robots without good reason. You could argue that narrative is irrelevant for arcade games, but it feels like a missed opportunity.

So it's clear that rekindling classical beat-em-up mechanics is the core aim of Scrap Games. We'll have to judge whether the title is worth a whirl. The visuals are already pretty, and the translation of 3D environments into a side-scroller is executed well. So now we'll see how combat fares up in this mysterious game world.

Starting, you'll get some satisfaction from the combat. Executing moves is fluid and straightforward, with a decent control schematic. The idea is that players progress through multiple stages with their chosen robot, enhancing their abilities as they garner points from victories. You'll also get opportunities to add weapons and assets to improve combat capabilities.

However, Scrap Games doesn't diversify enough to retain player interest throughout a playthrough. Combat gets bland quickly, and the casual pace of the game doesn't bring the intensity of old arcade classics. It feels more like a customizable walking simulator than a passionate attempt at reigniting classic beat-em-ups.

Should Have Stayed in the Past

There are suspicions that Scrap Games might be a portfolio game because the title lacks much in gameplay. We'll give the developers credit that the title is polished and visually looks fantastic. But the entire experience feels bland and not helped by the fact that there's no fixed narrative, character stories, or raison d'etre. If you compare it to other indie side-scrollers like Limbo, there's much to be desired.

If Scrap Games is a portfolio game, the developers should not charge for the title. Shelling out a significant price for a bland experience might be the most frustrating thing. Should there be more effort into combat and creating a more immersive game world around the universe, it could merit a cost. However, you'll feel it's like watching paint dry an hour into the game.
