SCP Secret Laboratory

Based on the popular internet paranormal phenomenon, SCP Secret Laboratory is an online multiplayer game where you and your friends must fight to stay alive in a sinister lab filled with all sorts of eldritch abominations. Arm yourself with whatever you can find and endure the unstoppable siege of the SCP forces, as you work together – or against – your friends to complete your objectives.

Aside from a considerable amount of technical issues, the overall experience of playing SCP Secret Laboratory is an entertaining one. The ongoing development and the game’s excellent atmosphere make it an easy recommendation for horror fans looking for a cooperative game.

Work As A Team

The original idea for SCP Secret Laboratory emerged from the also popular SCP Containment Breach. The main difference is that while Containment Breach is a single-player experience, Secret Laboratory has been built from the ground up as a cooperative multiplayer game.

In many regards, Secret Laboratory plays like an SCP version of Left 4 Dead: at the beginning of each match, players choose a faction that serves a specific role, each with unique objectives and victory conditions. This variety keeps the game entertaining for a good while, especially because each class controls quite differently. You have your usual D-Class personnel and Foundation scientists working for the SCP foundation, but you’re also able to choose from a variety of mercenary forces and even the SCP themselves.

Monsters Everywhere

One of the neat things about Secret Laboratory is that it’s clear that the game was made by a team of fans that absolutely loved the source material. You have a wide selection of creatures and object SCPs to choose from, making the game feel like a very competently made experience.

Along with the infamous SCP-173 sculpture, players will find five other SCPs ready to choose from. The best part is that each creature features a unique set of powers that drastically affects the way the game is played. For example, SCP-939 has the ability to mimic other humans, making the game feel like a scary 3D version of Among Us.

When it comes to scary games, SCP Secret Laboratory really knows how to make things spooky. While not outright terrifying, the oppressive atmosphere of the lab and its dimly-lit hallways are enough to make your hair stand on end. The claustrophobic map design is also great for multiplayer sessions and is overall pretty well crafted for an indie game. Speaking of the game’s indie nature: the visuals are the only part of the whole experience that might seem a bit jarring for some players. While the lighting looks phenomenal under most circumstances, character models and textures can’t say the same.

The game looks like it was made using an early build of Garry’s Mod or some other Source engine game, even though it was built using Unity. That might also be an issue for some players, as the Unity engine is known for its stability issues, and they’re present in this game as well. Performance issues are a common occurrence in SCP Secret Laboratory. Fortunately, they’re mostly small hitches in framerate and other minor annoyances that can be ignored during normal gameplay.

8.5

SCP Secret Laboratory is an excellent online multiplayer game that’s definitely a treat for horror fans – as long as they can deal with some annoying performance issues.

  • Entertaining multiplayer gameplay
  • Spooky environments to explore
  • Surprising gameplay variety

This review delves into the game's immersive gameplay, diverse roles, and the pros and cons of the experience, ultimately providing a comprehensive assessment.

About the game

SCP: Secret Laboratory offers players the chance to embody various roles, including D-Class Personnel, Foundation Scientists, Nine-Tailed Fox Units, Foundation Security, Chaos Insurgency, and even SCP Entities. Each role comes with unique abilities, objectives, and challenges, allowing for diverse gameplay experiences and replayability. The game successfully captures the essence of the SCP Foundation universe, where players must adapt and make strategic decisions to survive and fulfill their faction's objectives.

The game excels at creating an atmospheric and intense environment. The dark, foreboding corridors of the facility, combined with the unsettling SCP entities lurking around every corner, generate a constant sense of tension and unease. Encounters with SCPs, such as SCP-049, SCP-079, and SCP-096, provide adrenaline-pumping moments as players must navigate their unique abilities and survive their relentless pursuit. The game masterfully balances suspense and action, delivering thrilling gameplay experiences.

Comparison to Similar Games

SCP: Secret Laboratory can be compared to the popular asymmetrical horror game, Dead by Daylight. Both games feature multiplayer interactions with distinct roles and objectives. However, SCP: Secret Laboratory distinguishes itself by incorporating the unique SCP Foundation lore and its wide range of paranormal entities. The game offers a more immersive and terrifying experience for players who enjoy exploring the sinister world of SCP.

Still we can see how this is a humble indie game so the entire this is much smaller than Dead by Daylight.
