The Power Rangers TV series might be one of the most high profile media properties in the world. However, it would be fair to say that the series has never quite spawned the quality of games that one would have expected. One title that might provided some users with an interesting title to try out from the Power Rangers franchise, though, would be side-scrolling 2013 release Power Rangers Megaforce.

Released on the Nintendo DS, this title was highly popular among Power Rangers fans when it was released. Today, it still holds a small audience of fans who want to return to the side-scrolling beat-em-up action that fits the Power Rangers IP like a glove. Does the game, though, do itself justice outside of having an excellent setting?

Side scrolling mediocrity awaits

Despite having an interesting card-based system that utilised the dual screens of the 3DS, Power Rangers Megaforce simply cannot provide the level of entertainment that one would expect. The limited graphical output is matched by a pretty repetitive gameplay loop. You face off against some very limited approximations of enemies from the IP, fighting as your favourite Power Ranger to take on the various enemies you will face.

You will get bored pretty quickly with this game, we fear. There is simply not enough happening in the plot, the gameplay loop, or the level variety to encourage any kind of meaningful playthrough beyond the first. There is not much to enjoy here, sadly, apart from the fact that you get to run around as the Power Rangers.

Power Rangers done wrong

The Power Rangers series has never been properly served by a good and complete video game, really. This does nothing to alleviate that. While some might hope for an experience akin to something like Streets of Rage, this never manages to get on anything like the same level in terms of enjoyment, mechanics, or replayability.

There is precious little about Power Rangers Megaforce that makes it worth trying out for anyone who did not play it at release. The graphics are minimal, the gameplay is boring, and there is no real incentive to keep playing. Add in a wooden plotline and a very basic overall style, and it would be hard to recommend Power Rangers Megaforce to anyone who is looking for a high class gaming experience.
