I have to say that My Child Lebensborn is one of the most heartbreaking games that I have ever played. Part visual novel and part management game, this is not a game for those of you who are not willing to be taken on a ride through every part of the emotional spectrum. The premise of the game is that you are trying your best to raise a child, but it can often feel like everything is against you.

Trying To Make A Home

The game is set in Norway and you have just adopted a child from Germany after the war. In My Child Lebensborn you can choose between a boy or a girl, I opted for the little boy. The people of the town are not welcoming at all and there is a lot of anti-German behavior from the kids at school, his teacher, and even the other adults.

It can be absolutely heartbreaking to see your child come home from school all dirty and scuffed up after dealing with bullies. The whole point of the game is to try and give your child the best life possible. The writing here is just fantastic and it made me feel happy, sad, and angry at many different points of the story.

Trying Your Best

There are two main aspects to the gameplay of My Child Lebensborn. One is that you have three main meters that you have to keep an eye on, you need to make sure that your child is fed, clean and happy/going to school. Keeping on top of this, especially at the start is easier said than done. You also have to work so you can afford to put food on the table and sometimes it can be hard to decide if you should work overtime or get home so you can read them a bedtime story. Eventually, you will crack mastering your time and the meters do not become an issue anymore.

Communicating The Path Of Life

The other aspect of the gameplay is the visual novel aspect and this is where the majority of the story unfolds. You get to have many conversations with your child and it is here where the game really pulls on those heartstrings! I always tried my best to make sure that they were as happy as can be and tried to help them understand this cruel world. There are times when it feels like there are no right choices and that can be heartbreaking! You legit will develop a bond with this kind and that is all because the writing is so good.

Like An Old Storybook

My Child Lebensborn has a very interesting art style, it is supposed to look like an old timey German style children’s book. It gives the game a very unique kind of style and it is certainly something that I find very appealing. It is very impressive how they were able to convey emotions on the child’s face even with the cartoon style that they went for.

I really cannot say enough good things about My Child Lebensborn. It is just a fantastic game and one that stuck with me for a long time after I had seen it through to its conclusion. I am sure many people will play this multiple times as there are different paths the story can take and you can play through the game with the other child too. For me, this is a game I played once and that is it. I made my choices and I want to stick with them. Still, even though is a one and done style of game for me, it is a game that I highly recommend.
