Lumencraft

Lumencraft is a very cool shooter, tower defense game, and survival game all wrapped up in one. Heck, it even has roguelike elements about it too. As I write this, the game is an early access title, but I thought that we could have a bit of fun today by looking at what this action-packed title is all about.

Save Yourself To Save Mankind

The premise of the story that is being told here in Lumencraft is one that I think is very cool. The surface of the planet is no longer a safe place to live so for years mankind has lived underground and things could not be any bleaker. That is until a rare and special crystal is found deep under the surface called lumen. This can be used as a new energy source and give mankind a much better chance for survival. You have been sent to collect lumen, but be warned, all others that have been sent have yet to return! It has a bit of a sci-fi and even horror twist about it which I think is very cool.

Building For A Better Future

Lumencraft is such an interesting game when it comes to the actual gameplay. You have to build a base and it is from this base that you will be able to go and try to find the precious lumen. You will have to dig tunnels and blast away at the rock and anything else that is in the way in order to make your way to the lumen. It sounds simple enough, but there are all kinds of enemies that want you dead. This is where the tower defense gameplay comes into play. You have to build various defensive structures that you can improve and even replace as you progress through the game.

Taking The Fight To Them

As well as the tower defense aspect of Lumencraft, you can also roll your sleeves up and take on hordes of enemies yourself. This is the part of the game that is most exciting to me, if you have some towers as a good backup, you can get in there and clear out the waves of enemies before they ever really threaten your base. The environments are fully destructible so getting to the lumen is going to be just as much fun as fighting for it!

Dark And Fiery Style!

Lumencraft is one of those games that at first glance does not look anything special in the looks department. However, the more I saw of this game, the more I came to love the style. From the realistic way the lava flows to the immensely satisfying way that the destructible environments break up and blow up as you make your way around. It also has a very clever use of lighting to which gives the game a very foreboding kind of style that I am a huge fan of.

Pros:

• I like the setting and the interesting story the game is telling
• It mixes together different genres very well
• The digging aspect of the game is very satisfying
• I think that this is a “just one more go” kind of game where you keep playing for hours and hours!

Cons:

• While I think it looks cool, games like this are not usually mainstream hits which is a shame
• I hope that there are some good cinematics to help move the interesting story along
