The Serpent Rogue is an upcoming alchemy-focused action-adventure title from Sengi Games, and Team17 Digital. As of now, the game has a downloadable demo available where players can get a small taste of what is to come. However the wait for a release date isn’t very far, and the owners of the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X | S, PC, and Playstation 5 can expect an April release.

Somethings Is Brewing

The Serpent Rogue is an RPG with a unique twist on the genre. It tasks players with mastering the art of alchemy from medieval times to overcome their obstacles. Players act as a warden, or a Plague Doctor in an attempt to rid the world of evil and atrocities. Essentially you are a hero, but not a common one, instead you use alchemy, botany, and craftsmanship to save the world. From what we see in the demo and trailers, there are countless potions with a wide array of effects to help you along your journey.

Even if the concept of potions is old, the adaptation made by the developers comes off as a fresh take on its application. The Serpent Rogue does have a cartoonish and animated look that invites a younger demographic, however, the mechanics behind crafting and strategizing might not be clear to the same audience. The game itself rewards creativity and adaptation, even if at times it doesn’t challenge you, it incentivizes you to explore.

Snaking Around

The Serpent Rogue has entertaining gameplay, with a pretty straightforward layout for commands. This simplicity helps and steers players towards the more “strategic” parts of the game. One of the things that will certainly catch the attention of players is how alive the world in The Serpent Rogue feels. The first pillar is highly associated with the use of potions and the different types of strategies that you apply. Discovery, as stated before, is ever-so inviting with a vivid world, that rewards visiting every corner of the map. And the evolution part is about the transformations and transmutations you can do to yourself and other creatures. Finally, the world is constantly affected by your actions, gameplay, enemies, combats and everything else shares a cause and effect relation, with how you approach the game.

The Serpent Rogue seems like a promising game with solid foundations, especially in what relates to exploration and world-building. Combat itself might not be the most compelling or interesting for most players, even if it seems original.
