Jitsu Squad is possibly the craziest and wildest beat em up that I have ever come across. I have been enjoying games like this since the 80s and I think that we are in a real golden age of scrolling beat em ups these days. This is a genre that really has exploded over the last few years. So much so that it can be hard for a new game without an established IP attached to it to stand out. Well, this is one game that has its own style and certainly is going to get the blood pumping while you play it.

Saving The Day

The whole style of Jitsu Squad is complete mayhem! The story of the game is that the galaxy is under threat from an evil sorcerer and only the Jitsu Squad has the guts and badass moves to stop him. It is fun and crazy stuff and the kind of thing that would be right at home in a Saturday morning cartoon… but with a lot of blood and violence!

Melting My Eyes

I have to say that visually, Jitsu Squad might be the best-looking scrolling beat em up that we have ever seen. The squad of four characters each has their own unique look, moves, and animations. However, it so the various levels and varied enemy design that really set this game apart. It has a ton of stuff going on in the backgrounds and it is all just so bright and colorful that you never know where to look.

Inspired By The Greats

Whenever you look at a game like this, you always compare it to the likes of Streets of Rage and Final Fight, hell the developers flat out say they were inspired by those games and that is awesome. However, they also have looked to classic fighting games such as Marvel vs Capcom and Super Smash Bros. for inspiration with the actual fighting too! It makes for a crazy, fast paced and fun beat em up that never gives you a moment to rest.

Deep And Meaningful

Jitsu Squad features a squad of four intense warriors. The “gimmick” here is that you can switch between them on the fly, taking advantage of each character’s abilities and moves. You can also play with your friends and play the game as a team! I like the way there is a progression system where you can level up and upgrade, plus you can earn this awesome power up that makes you invincible and very powerful for a short while.

If you are a fan of beat em ups, you are going to love what they have done with Jitsu Squad. We have already had great games such as Streets of Rage 4 and the relaunch of Battletoads. However, this is one of the most exciting new IPs when it comes to this genre and I think this could be a huge title when it is finally complete. If you are someone that enjoys games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, you are going to have an absolute blast with this game here.

Pros:

Each character has their own unique style and a ton of personality and style
The game is bright, colorful, and freaking nuts!
There is a lot more depth to the gameplay here than you usually get in a beat em up
It is inspired by some of the all time classic games!

Cons:

It may be a bit too crazy on screen, making it hard to see what is going on
While the premise and presentation are awesome, how story driven will the final game be?
