Island Saver

Island Saver is a first-person adventure game where players clean up garbage-infested islands while saving and banking coins along the way. Armed with your handy trash blaster, you'll travel across the fantasy-filled environments and restore them to their original beauty. While primarily designed to be an entertaining adventure, Island Saver also contains some important educational content for kids, mostly focused on financial and environmental information. Although it lacks the wild, action-packed moments of most modern first-person games, Island Saver is a surprisingly fun game that's perfect for younger players.

Main Game Features

  • Casual first-person adventure gameplay
  • Explore three distinct islands
  • Educational and family-friendly

Story

In Island Saver, you play as a Bionaut, an explorer sent to the Savvy Island region to help clean up trash that has washed ashore from the polluted ocean. At the beginning of the game, you set foot on Sandy Island and meet your guide, the talking parrot Kiwi. Due to the rising amounts of litter in the ocean, the islands have become overflowed with plastic and garbage, harming the delicate ecosystem. In order to fully restore things to their natural state, you'll have to engage with the local wildlife, clean up trash, and more. Although you meet a few animal friends along the way, this brief introduction is the only significant chunk of storytelling in the game. However, Island Saver succeeds without a dense story, as its environments are magical and cathartic to explore.

Gameplay

There are three different islands to explore in Island Saver, each offering a distinct environmental biome. You start off on the tropical beaches of Sandy Island, but soon move onto the snowy Icecap Island and volcanic Eruption Island. Using your trash blaster, you must clean up the islands, one region at a time. In addition to shooting items, your trash blaster can also suck up items, allowing you to pick up garbage and deposit it in recycling machines. Doing so rewards you with doubloon coins, which can be spent on upgrades, unlocking new areas, or invested in nearby banking terminals. Food sources like fruit trees are also covered in a dark goopy substance, which must be cleaned off by blasting water at them. With the trees healthy and fruits cleaned, you can feed native malnourished animals, rewarding you with even more coins.

With its focus on cathartic cleaning, Island Saver feels like a kid-friendly version of Viscera cleanup detail or a more grounded game similar to The Goop. The process of collecting trash and feeding animals doesn't sound all that appealing, but it's surprisingly addictive once you start. That said, it's a game that's definitely intended for younger audiences, as advanced gamers will likely find the progression shallow. There are a few things to keep you invested in the game beyond basic level completion, including trash blaster upgrades to buy and secret eggs to find. However, most experienced players will have very little trouble finding every secret and unlocking all the bonuses. Still, if you're not wholly focused on being challenged, there's still some fun to be had in Island Saver.

Conclusion

Most education games are usually bland or boring, but luckily, Island Saver defies the odds. By presenting a colorful world and easily achievable goals, the game invites players to have a relaxing adventure without too much difficulty. When compared to other modern first-person adventure games, Island Saver feels simple, but it's far more ambitious than you'd expect.
