Games don't have to be incredibly complex to be fun, in fact, some of the most entertaining games you can play are the simplest ones, and that's what this game is aiming for. Heavenly Bodies has been in development for nearly three years, and it's finally getting released this year. The team mentioned that they've been hard at work to include all the mechanics they envisioned into the game and to also make sure the players would be able to have as much fun as they want. But the title of the game doesn't really say much about the game itself, so we are here to talk about what it's all about with Heavenly Bodies, so let's get started.
About the game
Heavenly bodies take a lot of inspiration from the science fiction classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and with that, you may already have a clue about the setting. We are sent on a solitary mission to an empty space station as an engineer, and we are ordered to complete routine maintenance tasks.
Restoring the electricity through the solar panels, setting the motors running again, getting the space telescope ready, and getting it in orbit from the space station. These are all very realistic tasks we've seen in all kinds of space movies from The Martian to Gravity. The usual moving through the station in nearly complete darkness during an energy cut, setting up a garden, gathering mineral samples and operating a capsule, and doing our routine spacewalks.
And like this, doing routine tasks in funny and cartoony ways, we go through Heavenly Bodies' 7 levels, or missions, depending on how you see them. Each one of these has routine tasks and a big important mission to accomplish. It's a pretty linear game, where you have to go through each step to get to the next one.
The fun is in the gameplay
Heavenly Bodies could sound like another simulation game, but the gameplay is what changes this a bit. YOu control the astronaut by moving the individual parts of their bodies. A trigger button closes their right hand, the other the left hand, and so on, to control the body part by part. And there's also the added gameplay fun of the cooperative model. This is very reminiscent of Snipperclips, where two players have to make use of every trick they can to move their characters and complete specific missions, in the best way they can.
Heavenly Bodies is a fun and simple game, but it is maybe a little bit too simple, and it can feel a little empty. It's hard to see where all the years of development went when you play the finished product. However, even with that in mind, it is a fun little game to enjoy for a few hours.
The game is really short and it lacks some content, it could definitely make use of much more interaction by the player's hand to add more depth to the game and more content as well.
Pros:
- Great visuals
- Fun gameplay
- Easy to enjoy
- Relaxing
Cons:
- Short
- Lacks content
- Bad replay value
