The connection between humans and animals can sometimes be stronger than the one among humans. That's why people cry more when things go bad for a dog in movies and TV as compared to when the same happens to humans. Forever Ago makes use of that emotional connection between people and dogs, and uses it most interestingly. Germany-based developer studio Third Shift crafted an emotional journey in this game, and we're going to be talking about it now. So, let's get started.

About the game

Forever Ago has the player playing the role of Alfred, an old man that's on a journey to the north seeking redemption after a terrible misfortune happens. This is a road trip game, and that's a perfect genre to see how characters develop as they progress in their journey. This is mostly an emotional and narrative experience, so the gameplay itself falls a second place to the storytelling

The direct event that led to this journey is unknown, but Alfred's road trip is not a solitary one, for he is traveling with his dog. On this trip, we'll get to know and understand more about their relationship. And even how they both react to help each other in moments where despair seems to rule it all.

The exploration and journey is an interesting one, and you’ll be able to use the camera to picture every meaningful moment you get to experience in the game. Explore different natural views like forests, lakes, mountains, and much more.

An emotional journey

This story is mostly a narrative experience, full of melancholic moments, heartfelt situations, and more. The Narrative can be slow-paced, and even with the art, it reminds us of titles like Firewatch. Forever Ago is a mostly human game, and a unique, emotional experience.

The soundtrack and art department also help complete the three-dimensional experience of the title. The beautiful themes are absolutely part of the artistic and emotional experience of Forever Ago.

It's a game that promises a beautiful story you could sit and cry to, this is a character-driven story, and they are written to go for the emotional side of the gamer: an old man and a dog. The graphics and the beautiful scenery build the atmosphere of deep melancholy the entire game carries.

While this is an intensely emotional story, it may not be for everybody, as the pacing is pretty slow, and it can even get to be quite depressing. We are waiting to see how the story unfolds, and see if the game delivers a real punchline as it seems to be building up from the beginning.

The emotional moments can be quite heavy, and even though the game is beautiful, it may not be a calm and relaxing experience. Since it carries such a heavy emotional load, it can be a heavy and interesting experience. This character is not what you'd usually expect from a video game hero, so we can't wait to see what's going on in Forever Ago.

Pros:

  • Excellent production
  • Incredible sound quality (Voice acting, soundtrack, and sound design)
  • Emotional story

Cons:

  • Slow pace
  • Can get boring
  • Maybe too emotional
