INDUSTRIA

Not many titles are able to say they have received the prestigious “Epic Mega Grants Recipient” award. This title is reserved for the few truly amazing projects being developed in Unreal Engine 4, and INDUSTRIA is one of them. An upcoming third-quarter release is set for the game that was developed by Bleakmill and Headup. Headed exclusively for Windows, the title offers a unique view of a historical period of human society.

Tear Down the Walls

An indie first-person shooter rendered in Unreal Engine 4, INDUSTRIA, is a game that pits humans against humanoid robots. It tells the story of the events surrounding the end of World War II, and the destruction of Berlin’s Wall. As the wall is torn down, Berlin comes to life with streets brimming with people celebrating their freedom.

At the same time in a secret facility, a man mysteriously disappears, leaving cryptic messages for you before he vanishes. The player takes the role of Nora, a young woman who sets out to figure what happened to the missing man.

The story gets even more interesting as you reach the facility, and notice that everything has been erased and deleted. Exploring further, and further ultimately leads you into a place where time, space, and the universe apparently don’t follow any laws. Following the mysterious trail and secrets, you are thrown into a parallel dimension, where you set out to discover the whereabouts of the missing man. Nora is also tasked with the curse of knowledge, as horrible revelations about humanity come to her, and she struggles with the responsibility she has towards the outside world.

No Humans Were Harmed

INDUSTRIA is a game where no humans are harmed. Everything in this alternate realm is humanoid in nature, but not truly human which makes sense given Nora’s responsibility with humans. Obviously, as a first-person shooter, there is shooting, reloading, strafing, running, and aiming in abundance countless times. From what developers have disclosed so far, there are only four different weapons to choose from while you defend yourself, which will likely deliver uniform combat.

There are threats all around the multiple levels in INDUSTRIA, as well as secret locations, and mysteries. The Unreal Engine 4 allows developers to create truly immersive levels, weapons, and layouts. At first sight, INDUSTRIA does not look like an indie game, but a deeper look into its simplistic UI and short campaign tell a different story. The game doesn’t come across as something extremely unique visually and will rely on its story-telling ability to set itself apart.

CONCLUSION

Winning a grant as a developer is an amazing task for any indie studio, and INDUSTRIA has already impressed some important people in the industry. As polished as it looks, stunning graphics and classic shooter gameplay is not enough to make any title stand out nowadays.

Luckily INDUSTRIA has an interesting narrative, and takes place in a remarkable moment in history, showing it has the potential to differentiate itself through narrative. Similar games are BioShock, Half-Life, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and other shooters that have meaningful stories to accompany them.

PROS:

  • Unreal Engine 4
  • Graphics Are Polished
  • Engaging Story

CONS:

  • Short 4-Hour Campaign
