Dwerve

Yes, there are probably too many retro dungeon crawlers being released now. But do any of them have tower defense style combat? Dwerve is a game trying to shake up the mold for classic-style action-adventure RPGs - and the initial impressions look intriguing. Maybe we're in for something special amongst the plethora of copy-paste dungeon crawlers lately?

It's an exciting idea to try and go cross-genre with this game style. Much of the time, these ambitious experiments tend to fall a bit short of the goalposts. However, something is promising about Dwerve, mainly because the combat looks so incredibly satisfying. Let's see if the experience lives up to its impressions!

Diggy, Diggy Turret

So let's go over the core premise of Dwerve. You'll play as a young dwarf engineer driven to explore the ruined kingdom of your ancestors, bent on discovering lost technologies and recovering the race's former glory. But not all is peachy down the depths of the dwarven realms. A witch-queen stops you from getting your mitts on all the region's treasures.

Suppose you've ever played classic fantasy RPGs. You'll know that the dwarves are never the best warriors of their counterparts. However, they are excellent engineers, and that's where the concept of turret-based combat comes in - and you'll have to use your noggin to defeat the hordes of enemies sent against you. Not often will you have to strategize in an action-adventure game!

But is it as satisfying as the initial impressions make out to be? While it takes some time to get used to the combat mechanics, Dwerve is good fun. It's not only the intense battles that prop up the game. This underground kingdom has a rich history, diverse visuals, and exciting characters and artifacts. You'll find yourself engaged in more ways than one!

Dwerve does an excellent job of combining tower defense, action-adventure, and RPG mechanics under the vise of a classic dungeon crawler. Despite a more challenging introduction to gameplay, players of all calibers will slowly get immersed in all the sights, sounds, and enigma of the title.

Dwerve Away

You'd go into Dwerve thinking that you were getting another replica dungeon crawler game like Enter the Gungeon. However, the outcome was indeed a surprise. The game stands on its own feet, seamlessly transitioning the combat into a more strategic tower defense style. The ensuing battles can be pretty entertaining wherever you are and whatever you're doing.

There are occasions where Dwerve can get frustrating, seeing combat limitations to erecting turrets in suitable locations. But there aren't too many moments where you'll not feel satisfied with gameplay. Dwerve is a surprise winner and a recommendation for anyone that enjoys classic dungeon crawlers but wants something more unique.
