Ratbag games is a game developer well-known for delivering some incredibly solid titles that are, at the same time, often regarded as Budget games. Even though such a term usually has a negative connotation, after all, who’d want the cheaper version of a game they love? But when they are original budget games, and at the quality level of Ratbag developers. And if you're a fan of Ratbag and budget games, and a racing fan, the Dirt Track Racing 2 is made just for you. But there are many types of racing games, and it certainly is a big genre, so what's this one like? Well, let's talk about it and find out!

About the game

In Dirt Track Racing 2 we will recreate off-road racing on oval, egg-shaped, or figure-eight tracks, with the Difference engine, very realistic physics, 14 tracks, and three types of vehicles. The Australian studio Ratbag has developed such well-known titles as Powerslide, the other titles of the Dirt Track Racing saga or Leadfoot.

The game will put players up against 14 competing vehicles, grouped into three classes: pro stock, late model, and modified. But users will also be able to adjust the tuning of their vehicles. The two available game modes will be race and arcade. In the former, we will be able to buy vehicles, upgrade them, fix them after each race and pay the fees to compete in the different races. On the other hand, the arcade mode immerses us in a race quickly and without so many options or complications.

To complete the experience, several game features will help us improve our driving skills. These include the possibility to choose between the automatic or manual transmission and to change gears manually or automatically depending on the type of terrain we are driving over.

What's today's equivalent?

Well, it's hard to find a modern equivalent since racing games are quite similar. But including all the dirt tracks and NASCAR-like tracks, probably something like the newest Forza games would be the equivalent or even the Dirt series. Of course, these are much higher quality games, not only because they are modern, but also because of the development and gameplay quality. And with that, we get to the review part.

Dirt Track Racing 2 is a fun game, but it has a lot of flaws. Especially in the technical aspect of the game, where it seems very unpolished. Remember that back in those days, it was much harder to update a game than it is now, so games had to work really well on the first go. The visuals and the audio aren't good, but the gameplay is pretty fun, and there are pretty interesting simulation elements in the game, such as the commentary during races. For some players this could actually be a hidden gem, so make sure to check it out if you are a car-games fan!
