What drew me towards Becastled was how the game promised to blend together city building and tower defense gameplay. Not only does it succeed in that, it does it with a very whimsical fantasy style that just clicked with me right from the start. The game has a very addictive quality to it and it was one of those situations where I started playing it after dinner one evening and before I knew it, a couple of hours had zoomed past and I was getting into trouble for still not having taken out the trash!
The Sun and the Moon
While I would not go as far as to say that what we have here is a super story driven kind of experience. Becastled still offers a fun narrative and at the very least, it gives you a good reason to be doing what it is you are doing. You are the leader/ruler of the Sun Kingdom and you are tasked with keeping your people happy and busy, all the while, keeping on expanding and improving your settlement. However, when night falls, the Moon Beasts come out to play and when I say play, I mean they want to destroy all that you have built!
The Builders Are Always On The Move
The first aspect of the game we need to talk about is the city building style of gameplay that Becastled offers. During the day, you are tasked with building up your city, of course, you need to gather resources to do this, but it is what you do with those resources which is key here. You need to build strong walls and defenses and make sure that people are ready for when night comes. However, your peoples happiness is also important so you need to make sure that they have places to live, train and relax, like a tavern for example. I really enjoyed this aspect of the game and the fact that night is always around the corner, adds a bit of tension to it too.
The Night Begins To Shine
Hey, if you get that reference, you are awesome and we can watch Teen Titans together any time. Anyway, Becastled also has a pretty fun tower defense gameplay style as well. Once it becomes dark, the Moon Beasts will start making their way to your settlement and these guys will just attack, attack, attack. This means that your walls need to be strong and your need to have plenty of people to man the various defenses that you have set up. The chances of getting through a night, completely unscathed are slim, but this just motivates you even more the next day to try and build bigger and better, before these Moon Beasts come back!
A Battle That Is Easy On The Eyes
The thing with the presentation of Becastled is that on one hand, there is nothing here that is going to blow you away. If I am being honest, the Sun Kingdom residents and the Moon Beasts are kind of generic looking. However, there is a certain smoothness, almost like a step below being cell shaded to the visuals that I did like. The game offers different weather types and I found that when it snowed, there was something appealing about this. With the art style and color pallet that they have gone for. It does mean that it is always nice and easy to see everything.
I was very impressed with Becastled and I had a lot of fun with it. I am not sure it is the kind of game that I would go back to time and time again. However, for a good solid week, this was my most played game as I got very hooked on it. I do think there comes a point where you feel like you are just doing the same thing over and over again. But, until you get there, this is a very fun time. Plus, the way it mixes the city building and the tower defense gameplay together, works very well.
Pros:
- I enjoyed building and improving my city
- The battles with the Moon Beasts are fun
- There is a kind of whimsy about the game that I liked
- I found this to be very addictive!
Cons:
- After a while, you have seen all that it has to offer
- The characters could have a bit more personality

Game Reviews
Becastled is a tower defense simulator. Only instead of a tower your own castle and the city inside it. Build the most elaborate fortifications on a limited budget and become the best ruler. Start with small buildings and surround the whole city with thick walls to protect it from constant attacks. How long can your city survive? Can you develop your infrastructure with constant threats from outside? Make a defense plan to keep your enemies away from your walls forever.
Pros of the game:
- Strategize your tower defense
- Build your walls with a variety of different tools
