StarCraft Remastered

What's that game that completely revolutionized the RTS genre? That one everybody seems to keep playing even though it's nearly two decades old? Oh yeah. Well, maybe it's about time it had a bit of a coat of paint, don't you think? The original developers tend to agree. That's why we see StarCraft: Remastered.

It's always hard to believe games can have a life cycle of over 20 years. However, Starcraft was one of the most well-designed, immersive, and competitive real-time strategy games ever. People are still playing it today at the competition level, though, face the struggles of adapting the 1998 classic to modern systems. So there actually is a call to give the game an update suited to our times. So what's changed with StarCraft: Remastered?

Bridge Over Troubled Waters

It feels funny that newer systems can't handle old games - but nobody would have expected people to play StarCraft in the 21st century. As one of the world's most celebrated RTS games, little needs to be done to the gameplay. There's a near-universal acceptance that everything was decent mechanically. Developers Blizzard needs to make sure they fix what wasn't broken.

Much to fan delight, that is precisely the approach that they took. The aim of StarCraft: Remastered was to modernize the game to suit today's screen. Furthermore, to facilitate more competitive gameplay. Arguably, that's been fully achieved with brand new 4K-ultra-high-definition graphics and reworked sound. It looks and feels fantastic.

The most significant update is the modernization of the multiplayer interface. Finally, you no longer need to struggle setting up games and creating competitions on the old servers. You can compete as you once did with a more streamlined lobby and easy log-in with your existing Blizzard accounts. Honestly, that's what people were more interested in - and it thankfully delivered on that desire.

Nothing has fundamentally changed in the gameplay of StarCraft: Remastered. It still uses the same engine where the core mechanics are the same. The concern that arises is that the game won't be accessible to new players. But let's face it, StarCraft: Remastered wasn't made with the ambition of bringing new players on board. It was developed to satisfy the already existing fan base.

Remaster of Time

Developers Blizzard did a bang-up job of this remaster - focusing on what needed to get an upgrade and staying away from what could have ruffled some feathers. The same can't be said for other remasters such as Warcraft III, where we are still trying to figure out what went wrong there. Shockingly, it's the same developer.

Regardless, Blizzard managed to keep their bread and butter intact with StarCraft: Remastered. It was exciting to play one of the most engaging RTS games again. It's finally adaptable for the high-resolution screens and satisfies the smooth frame rates we all crave. If you haven't tried it yet, it's definitely worth getting stuck in again - the improvements won't disappoint.

Pros:

  • New 4K visuals spark new life onto the surface of the game
  • Nothing changed from the already excellent gameplay
  • Much more refreshing multiplayer interface

Cons:

  • No changes to make the game accessible to new players
