What we have here with VergeWorld is one of the coolest looking retro inspired games to be released this year. I am surprised that this game has not been talked about or hyped up more than it has! The developers of this game seem pretty awesome so I wanted to share my thoughts on the game and let you know why it is a game that you need to be interested in. Also, as I write this the game is not yet complete, but there is a demo you can check out for free and I highly recommend that you do that!

It Is Like What???

The developer’s description of VergeWorld says that it is like “After Burner meets WipeOut, meets The Mandalorian, meets Mad Max” and those are all things that I love! I would also add in a bit of Star Fox 64 and the Star Wars Arcade Game from Atari into the mix as well. The game takes place in the future and there is a civil war going on. You steal a ship and decide to head out and find the resistance so you can join it and make some real changes to the way the world is run.

Canyon Run!

The gameplay of VergeWorld is pure arcade style mayhem. You pilot your ship in the 3rd person (think games like Afterburner and Star Fox 64) and you haul ass through these randomly generated levels and blow away anything that gets in your way. As well as shooting, you need to pay very close attention to each level as avoiding slamming into a wall is probably the biggest challenge that you have. There are also epic boss battles in the game too which give me some real Panzer Dragoon vibes.

Always Flying Forward

One thing that I like about the gameplay of VergeWorld is how you are always moving forward. While surviving the onslaught of enemies and the canyons and walls is tough. If you make it to the outposts, you can refuel your ship and also upgrade it. The random nature of the way things are generated in the game means that no two runs will ever be exactly the same and that is going to make things very addictive!

The 32-Bit And 16-Bit Eras Come Together

From a style point of view, VergeWorld is one of the coolest looking games that I have seen in quite some time. The game has a very PlayStation, perhaps Dreamcast look about it and that is awesome, it has a very cool and sleek look to it and it is one of the best looking “retro” games that I have seen this year. What is interesting about the style of the game is that the story scenes are done in a more 16-bit style with some truly amazing pixel art. The soundtrack also has more of a 16-bit feel about it too.

I am very excited for VergeWorld to be completed and put out! This has a real arcade feel about it and it is just balls to the wall action all the way. I like how it is challenging and how that because of the random way things are generated, you are always going to be kept on your toes. You can master a game like Star Fox, Afterburner, or Star Wars, but that is going to be much harder to do with a game like this that is for sure.

Pros:

  • I love the style of the game
  • The flying and shooting action is awesome
  • I like how when you make it to an outpost you can get upgrades for your ship
  • The levels are randomly generated

Cons:

  • Some of the levels may feel a bit on the unfair side with how they are made
  • I think to get the best out of this you have to be into arcade style shooters
