Survival games are one of the most popular genres out there, and Valnir Rok brings a new twist to this familiar favorite. The game is developed by Encurio GmbH in Germany and was inspired by Norse mythology. The game kicks you into a full RPG multiplayer experience with little to no handholding, and you’ll need to live off the land to survive. Unlike many games that make crafting as easy as a few clicks, you’ll need to find and gather all the supplies you need to make a new tool.
If you’ve ever played Skyrim, add a sandbox element to it, and you’ll have an idea of what Valnir Rok is like, right down to the dragons. In particular, the menu music is very reminiscent of Skyrim, and is likely a nod to the game.
No tools? No materials.
Another layer of realism in the game is that you can’t go punching trees with your fist and expect to get finished lumber out of it. You can’t harvest the proper materials without the proper tools. There’s something of a steep learning curve for this aspect of the game, and neglecting it will cause you to ascend to Valhalla very quickly. You’ll have to explore the map to find the right items. Exploration rewards you with weapons and materials as well, so it’s well worth making your way around the generously sized map.
Best played PvP
Although the game has many different options, it’s most fun when played Player versus Player. This gives you the most realistic combat, and takes advantage of one of Valnir Rok’s best points. The combat in the game feels very meaty, and the sound effects and other details are pretty good.
Unfortunately, the PvP servers are sparsely populated, so be sure to invite a few friends if you plan to test it out.
Throughout the game, there are areas that glitch every now and again. You may get stuck in the terrain and be unable to move, with teleporting the only option to free yourself. This may sound fine, except for the fact that the teleports are often very far away, making getting back to where you were a slog.
The animation sequences for a few other areas can also sometimes be odd, especially during combat sequences. In terms of sound and music, transitions to different areas can also be very abrupt. The game also sometimes outright crashes, but not often enough to be a deal breaker for the game.
This game feels too similar to other survival and Norse myth games to really stand out, but it is still an enjoyable game. With a large map, roleplaying possibilities, and multiplayer options the game has a lot going for it. If you enjoy Norse mythology and survival games, this is your chance to strap on your Viking helmet and go explore. Just make sure you bring a few friends to help make the game more fun.
