The Wild at Heart

The Wild at Heart is a beautiful adventure/puzzle game that pretty much ticks all of the boxes for what I personally like in a game such as this. Talking about a game like this is a tad on the tricky side as it is very story-driven so you do not want the story that is on offer spoiled for you and you do not have to worry about that. If you like adventure games that have some cunning puzzles and an engaging story you have to take a closer look at this game.

The Deep Dark Woods

This game is incredibly story-driven. The plot of The Wild at Heart is about two children who head into the deep dark woods. The reason that they head into the woods in the first place is quite deep and dark, but once they get to the woods, they encounter these strange beings called Spritelings as you head to a strange new land deep in the woods. There is a lot of lore at play here and these two kids who were “running away” end up thrust into a deep mystery that only they can get to the bottom of. It is truly great stuff and something that will keep you interested the whole time through.

A Story Book

One of the first things that you will notice about The Wild at Heart is the presentation. I have played many games before where they try to look like a storybook, but I do think that this one is perhaps the best I have ever seen. The way this game is drawn is just phenomenal, it is such a great-looking game. The creatures in these woods look fantastic and show some amazing imagination.

Whimsy And Dread!

The soundtrack in The Wild at Heart is another winner. The music in the game manages to be both whimsical and also dark at the same time. It walks a very fine line between being a game that sounds “cute” and also a game that can send shivers running down your spine. There is no voice acting here and I think I am cool with that as this is the kind of game where you get an idea of the way the characters sound inside your head.

Exploring The Woods

You play as the two kids one has this vacuum cleaner type device that is known as Gustbuster which can be used to defend yourself and also solve various puzzles. The other child is smaller and can fit into tighter spots which again helps with various puzzles. You can also use the Spritelings for fighting off bad creatures and also you can also use these to solve puzzles too.

There is a night and dark thing at play here too. During the day, you will mostly come against the creatures of the forest, but when it gets dark, you will find more evil and sinister creatures in the woods. There is also a crafting system here in the game too, You can find various items like scrap and crystals and you can use these to make different items that will help you during their travels.

What they have crafted here with The Wild at Heart is truly something special. I am not sure this is the game that you would play over and over again as it is so story-driven and the way the story unfolds will certainly be something that sticks with you. If you like adventure games and games that have clever puzzles to solve that are all wrapped up in a tight story, you cannot go wrong with this.

Pros:

  • The game has a great story
  • It looks like a storybook that has been brought to life
  • The sound design in the game is great
  • The Spritelings are freaking adorable

Cons:

  • As the game is so story-driven, not sure you would play it through over and over again
  • Some of the puzzles may cause you to really scratch your head
