Fast paced action shooters are a staple in the gaming industry. Close to earning its place among the greats in the FPS genre, the original version of this game unfortunately suffered from reaching its full potential. Eight years following its release, iD software took one for the team and provided a full-fledged remaster that was satisfyingly titled, “Doom 3: BFG Edition”. Like its name suggests, it packs a real punch in its delivery. This review will cover the highs and mids of this spellbinding experience. In a surprising twist, there are no lows worth spotlighting in the solid remaster of a beloved title.

Bone chilling anticipation

Unlike its predecessors, Doom 3: BFG Edition doesn’t just throw the player into the action and expect you to mow through Hell Knights. Instead, the influence of Half-Life shines through in the most remarkable ways. There’s a strong presence of story elements that overshadow the plot at the start and during gameplay intervals. A lot of “whys?” in the Doom franchise are answered and there’s a newfound motivation behind the actions that take place in the game’s campaign.

Doom 3 doesn’t force this developed plotline on players and fans of the classic Doom experience can immediately jump into the horrifying action. However, players that take the time to digest the public service announcements and dialogue between employees on the Mars base at the start of the game, will find a much stronger understanding of the events that take place. You can feel the sense of dread and panic leading up the inevitable demonic invasion. This added sense of human fear makes for a cold anticipation of what’s to come.

A real challenge emerges

Doom 3: BFG Edition provides upscaled textures and improved lighting. Note, the lighting upgrades are not just for the sake of eye candy or realism. Instead, it borrows from the Resident Evil franchise and adds an ominous element to the way shadows are cast.

This leads us to the panic inducing scenes where your primary opponents arrive on scene. The demons aren’t mindless monsters that are primed for headshots. Approaching Doom 3 with that mentality is a surefire way to get yourself killed. Here, you’ll be fighting in close corners where the smallest mistakes have alarming consequences. Missed a shot? You’ll pay with an empty magazine. Took damage? Cross your fingers and hope no demons show up. The added limitation to what loot that is accessible creates a concern that makes finding resources ten times more satisfying.

Bountiful Additions

Doom 3: BFG Edition provides some nice additions to the experience. That way, you’ll remain entertained with demon killing action as you take on the forces of hell. The additional content includes Doom and Doom 2: Hell On Earth with all their additional expansions included in full glory. However, the aspect ratio and lack of proper navigation make them a chore to switch between.

8

As a remaster of Doom 3, fans will be excited to play through its aggressive adventure. However, players that expect the usual domination will be pressed to see the amount of skill required to achieve gameplay on that level. Regardless, it delivers.
