The Walking Dead: Season Two Episode 2 – A House Divided continues the story of Clementine and gives players another intense and nerve-rattling adventure. For fans of The Walking Dead show on AMC and the comics by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead game series is a must-play, and Season Two’s Episode Two: A House Divided keeps that sentiment intact.
In Season One—2012’ Game of the Year--players were introduced to Clementine—a shy and frightened kid that they must protect. The Walking Dead is a series that relies heavily on the story and immerses the player in its world.
Throughout the events of Season One, Clementine grows before your eyes. The game is packed with tough choices that affect the narrative and can drastically alter your player experience. Season 2 keeps the same foundation and ups the intensity. In Season Two, you now control Clementine—and she has become quite a capable survivor.
Episode 1 of Season 2 reintroduces the player to this grim world and brings us up to speed on what Clementine has been doing and how she’s progressed. In Episode 2, A House Divided, the player and Clementine are thrown into the thick of it. The episode picks up right where Episode One left off with Clementine trapped with whichever person the player chose to save at the end of Episode One.
The Walking Dead is a game built on choice. Players are faced with decisions in every episode and each decision determines the path forward. Often, these decisions are life or death and it’s entirely possible to lose members of your group for good. A House Divided starts fast in the choices department and the first encounter asks the player to make a hard choice.
Sometimes, you’re asked to decide whether someone lives or dies. The weight of the world this game lives in is always felt and the tough decisions resonate like no other game.
The Walking Dead isn’t the first game to try this ‘Choices Matter’ approach—Mass Effect famously popularized it—but The Walking Dead might just be the most effective use of this niche gameplay mechanic.
By far the star-attraction of Season 2—and especially in A House Divided—is our main character, Clementine. Though Clementine is the player-controlled character, she’s not entirely a blank sheet. She has a definable personality, but one that the player can mold.
She’s kind, brave, caring, but she also understands the world she lives in and can make the tough choices. Clementine’s is often heartbreaking, at times inspirational, and always a heart-pounding experience. It is through her that we see and experience the world of The Walking Dead, and she is sure to go down as one of the best characters in this franchise—including the show and the comic.
If you’ve been playing this series up to this point, there’s no reason to stop now. A House Divided is packed with emotional moments, surprises, and pulse-stopping thrills. There’s not a minute of gameplay or story wasted in this episode.
- Difficult choices make for a memorable episode
- The story does not lag
- A few surprises give new depth to season two
- As with all The Walking Dead episodes, it’s a short experience and even shorter than Episode 1
- Some may find the plot-heavy episode a bit lacking in the action department
