Evil Dead: Regeneration is a third-person hack 'n slash game based on the classic Evil Dead horror movies, originally released in the 1980s. Taking place in an alternate timeline after the events of Evil Dead II, this wacky and gory adventure follows the chainsaw-wielding Ash on yet another bloody romp. Similar to games like God of War and Devil May Cry, players navigate through linear stages, cutting down enemies and solving various puzzles. For fans of the Evil Dead movie series, Regeneration is a satisfying and aloof action game with only a few notable problems.
Main Game Features
- Bloody hack 'n slash action
- Tongue-in-cheek horror storytelling
- Six unique weapons to wield
The narrative of Evil Dead: Regeneration takes place in a world where the events of the third Evil Dead movie, Army of Darkness, never take place. Instead of traveling through time after the events of Evil Dead II, the main hero Ash has been committed to Sunny Meadows, a mental asylum. Instead of taking Ash seriously, the world is convinced that his memories are the product of insanity, leaving him in the asylum to get help. Unfortunately, a mad doctor at Sunny Meadows now possesses the evil Necronomicon, and intends on using the book's evil abilities to gain ultimate power. When the doctor's plan goes wrong, an army of deadites is released into the asylum, leaving it up to Ash to save the day. Along for the journey is a new sidekick character named Sam, who helps Ash in sticky situations while providing some exceptionally annoying humor. While the story is nowhere near as good as the films, it's a fun mixture of horror and comedy that aligns with the signature Evil Dead attitude.
With a chainsaw for an arm and a shotgun in hand, there's no doubt that Ash is made for crazy hack 'n slash action. Evil Dead: Regeneration provides that in full, offering a fun and bloody combat system. Starting out in Sunny Meadows asylum, you navigate through linear levels while killing enemies and collecting new weapons along the way. Ash can equip a melee weapon and ranged weapon on either hand, including his signature chainsaw, a flamethrower, and more. You can also pull off bloody finishing moves on stunned enemies, with gruesome animations that are loads of fun. For maximum carnage, Ash can also activate “Evil Ash” mode, filling him with rage and dealing excessive damage to enemies. After a few levels, you'll also be joined by Sam, a short sidekick character that you can utilize in both combat and puzzle-solving. Unlike other gaming sidekicks, Sam is meant to be kicked around, beaten up, and even killed in order to give Ash an advantage. Thanks to his half-deadite state, Sam can quickly regenerate after death, giving you multiple attempts at puzzles and obstacles. Later on, you'll also gain the ability to control Sam directly, letting you squeeze through tight passages and activate switches. Apart from his incessant comments and annoying voice, Sam is a useful and interesting addition to the gameplay experience.
When compared to other Evil Dead games like Evil Dead: Fist Full of Boomstick, Regeneration really captures the goofy and campy tone of the classic movies. Complete with one-liners, Regeneration provides players with an exciting journey packed with gory yet funny antics. The linear level design can occasionally grow repetitive, but the introduction of new weapons, enemies, and bosses keep things interesting.
If you're a fan of the Evil Dead franchise, Regeneration is arguably the best game based on the movies. Even if you're not, you'll still have a satisfying time slaying undead baddies in this irreverent adventure.
- Combat is satisfying
- Fun nods to the original movies
- Unique sidekick mechanic
- Repetitive level design
- Lackluster visuals
- Some annoying voice-acting

It's somewhat surprising what you can get out of a twenty dollar game. If you take nothing else away from my review, remember this, while this game is inexpensive, it deserves to be, and is yet still an enjoyable and worth it's cost.
Hailing from a popular yet abused franchise, long have the fans of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films wished for a title truly worth play. Evil Dead Regeneration changes that. With a loose narrative holding the game together, this time Ash is joined by a sidekick, Sam, a dwarf that's been changed into a deadite. Sam has kept his soul in the bargain, and provides not only entertaining commentary, but also strangely can be kicked at the enemies you encounter. Perhaps politically incorrect, and yet absurdly humorous, Sam himself can be used as a weapon. I leave you to judge that however you may.
The game is entertaining, although it is ultimately a normal platformer. While there's little challenge in terms of the gameplay, it's a fun romp, boomsticks and all. In my opinion, it is the acting of Bruce Campbell (Ash) and Ted Raimi (Sam), two of the actors from the Evil Dead series that makes the game truly entertaining, as they get plenty of chance to play up the comedy that made both Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness absolutely wonderful comedy horror films.
Unfortunately, in the end, there's little or no replay value in the game. Once you've played through every level, you've seen the entire game, and if you did it as I did, collecting the small bonus items scattered throughout the game, then you've also gotten to see every 'extra', which includes some truly outstanding, if dated, recordings of Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi hamming it up at the recording stand.
Again, this title may only sell for twenty dollars, but it's worth every penny, and is actually pretty good for a short time. All in all, I got around 6 hours of gameplay out of it, but you may get more, and it is definitely the best Evil Dead game to date.
